Description

Lespedeza thunbergii is a bush with abundant and late flowering. At the end of the summer it is covered with clusters of bilabiate pink purple flowers, a characteristic of the legume family. Its very fine and light foliage is of a beautiful blue-green colour that contrasts with more traditional foliage.

Each year Lespedeza thunbergii re-grows from its stump with somewhat thin, slightly trailing stems. Its spreading habit is quite low. It is perfect at the back of a perennial bed or to dress up a wall.

Marry its colours with other shades of blue, purple and pink, or create a contrast with e.g. yellow flowering plants.

Planting and care

Lespedeza thunbergii needs a sunny site, in rich and well-drained soil - achieve this by adding some compost and sand to your garden soil. It is relatively resistant to cold winds and potential drought. In order to promote strong rooting, water copiously when planting. Prune at the end of winter down to 25cm (10 in) from the ground, when the risk of severe frosts has passed.
