The young plant grows very well and relatively quickly for the past 4 years, in partial shade - shade, on the north side of the house (only a little sun from mid-May to late July?). It has very beautiful foliage that catches the eye... and the questions, but also an elegant, regular, harmonious shape. Currently, after being planted for 4 years, it has grown to a height of 4m (13ft). Given the exposure, I'm not sure if it will have flowers? But it is the foliage that is remarkable first and foremost.

Description

The Magnolia macrophylla is undoubtedly the most impressive tree of its genus. It is not its flowers that catch the eye at first glance, but its lush leaves, which can exceed 60cm (24in) in length!

Originally from North America, the large-leaved magnolia is a large bush with a rounded habit, reaching 10 to 15 meters in height when fully grown. Its large deciduous oblong foliage, measures from 50 to 80cm (20 to 32in) in length, and is light green on the upper side and whitish gray on the underside.

In summer, beautiful and large fragrant white flowers, 20-25cm (8-10in) in diameter, bloom at the end of the branches. This summer flowering is a characteristic of American species.

Although exotic in appearance, the Magnolia macrophylla is hardy in many regions and can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F) without damage. It is easy to grow and prefers partial shade, but can tolerate full sun in temperate regions. Avoid windy locations. It prefers light, deep, rich, and moist soil that is neutral to slightly acidic, and does not tolerate heavy soils that retain water in winter.

Plant the Magnolia macrophylla as a standalone specimen or in the back of a border, in an exotic setting with giant Brazilian rhubarb, rodgersias, and hedychiums.

Planting and care

Grow the Magnolia macrophylla preferably in partial shade (in full sun in temperate regions) but not in total shade. Plant it sheltered from cold and dominant winds, in a moist, rich, deep, well-drained neutral or slightly acidic soil. In weakly alkaline soil: dig a very large planting hole of at least 50-60cm (20-24in) deep and add ericaceous compost mixed with your garden soil. Mulch the Magnolia in the first year to prevent it from freezing during heavy winter frosts. Water it in case of drought but in normal conditions watering by rain will be sufficient. From February to June, before leaves appear, remove dead or diseased wood as well as crossing branches.
