More information

Magnolia denudata Sunrise is a new cultivar of Chinese origin, unique for its creamy white flowering with triangular fuchsia pink that forms like a flame on the blooming petals. Its flowers closely resemble calyxes that open in April-May. Unforgettable, like all flowering magnolias, this one has a compact habit and modest size which allows it to be grown in a pot.

Description

The biennially bearing Magnolia denudata 'Sunrise' is more of a bush than a tree due to its modest size, which does not exceed 2 meters (7 feet) in height. This new cultivar of Chinese origin is unique in its flowering: its calyx-shaped flowers display an elegant cream white color and are triangular with a fuchsia base. A fine line of the same color rises to the top of the petals. Very graceful, this ornamental bush with a compact habit can be grown in a pot.

This Magnolia, belonging to the family of magnoliaceae, is a recent Chinese cultivar, quite similar to Magnolia 'Green Diamond'. The shrub has a compact and more rounded habit than the typical species, and it is rather of modest size for a Magnolia, as it reaches a height of 2 to 3 meters (7 to 10 feet) at maturity. However, like all Magnolias, it is unique in its flowering, which occurs before the foliage emerges in April-May. Its tulip-shaped flowers are beautifully marked with a triangular cut that oscillates between fuchsia and lilac.

Having its origins in China, this Magnolia is perfectly hardy as it can withstand temperatures of around -15°C (5°F). An excellent ornamental shrub, it will work wonders in a small-sized garden, in a short grass meadow, where its remarkable flowering is most impressive. It can also be combined with a group of acid-loving shrubs (Rhododendrons, Camellias, Hydrangeas, Nandinas, Peonies...), for a Japanese-style garden. It is also possible to create beautiful flowering hedges along pathways, alternating this Magnolia with other cultivars (Magnolia grandiflora, Magnolia denudata...).

Planting and care

Magnolia 'Sunrise' prefers sheltered positions, sunny to partially shaded exposures, moist, well-drained, fertile, neutral or acid soil. It is not picky about soil quality. However, it does not like overly dry soils, windy locations, or root competition, as its root system is shallow. It is hardy (down to -15°C (5°F)), but it is advisable to protect young specimens from frost in the first few years after planting. Note that late frosts and cold winds can damage flower buds and young leaves, affecting flowering. Magnolia can be planted in spring or autumn, outside the frost period, and it should be placed in a sheltered spot away from cold winds. Prepare a hole 80 cm (32in) wide and deep, with a good addition of ericaceous soil and compost. Be careful when installing it in the hole, as the roots are fleshy but quite fragile. Immediate watering with lime-free water (rainwater) helps to settle the soil around the roots. During the first year after planting, Magnolia requires watering once a week. It will appreciate an annual mulch in spring. It is recommended to mulch the base to keep it moist during the hot season, enrich the soil, and protect it from the cold in winter. As its roots are fragile, transplanting should be avoided. The only enemies of Magnolia are pests such as scale insects, snails, and slugs that attack young plants, as well as diseases such as root rot (in excessively wet soil), fungal diseases and coral disease. It is worth noting that magnolias are ornamental trees that tolerate atmospheric pollution well.
