Malus Coccinella Courtarou - Crab Apple

Malus Coccinella is an ornamental apple tree with decorative fruits, its habit is spreading or semi-spreading, reaching 4 to 5m (13 to 16ft) (while maintaining a harmonious shape without the need for pruning.

Its foliage is deciduous, the leaves are ovate, alternate and dentate, dark green turning yellow-orange in autumn, earning it the nickname of purple-leaved apple tree. Flowering occurs in April and May in the form of red buds followed by pink-violet flowers, gathered in a multitude of small clusters.

In autumn, the tree produces miniature apples, the size of a cherry, which are deep red in colour, highly appreciated by birds.

This ornamental apple tree is a very good pollinator for early-flowering fruit trees. It will thrive in all types of soil, preferably fertile and rich, which is well-drained, with a sunny exposure.

This cultivar requires little maintenance, the variety is highly disease-resistant.
