The Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Prime Time’ is an innovative variety of Russian sage, with a hardy habit and exceptionally early and prolonged flowering. From June onwards, its blue-violet floral stems appear and remain beautiful until October. Not very tall, but dense and perfectly upright, the plant also offers pleasantly scented greyish foliage. Suited to dry and hot climates, this hardy plant is easy to grow in a wide variety of well-drained soils. Plant it in a sunny border or rockery to complement white, yellow, pink, or red blooms, the effect is guaranteed!
The Perovskia atriplicifolia, from the Lamiaceae family, originates from arid areas of Central Asia, particularly the steppes of Siberia and the Himalayan mountains. The 'Prime Time' cultivar, introduced in 2023 by Hans A. Hansen (US), from Walters Gardens Inc. (US), was awarded the Bronze Medal at Plantarium in Boskoop (NL) in 2023. This cultivar stands out from other varieties due to its early flowering and upright habit. Unlike other Perovskia, this variety maintains a perfectly straight structure, even when the stems are laden with flowers.
The plant reaches approximately 60 cm in height and 50 cm in width, forming a dense, compact bush. Its tiny deciduous leaves, elongated and slightly incised, are of a soft grey-green hue and emit a characteristic fragrance when crushed. From early summer, ‘Prime Time’ produces long spikes of blue-violet flowers, which bloom earlier than other Perovskia and last until October. This long flowering period makes this variety a preferred choice for adding colour to the garden over several months. Highly appealing to pollinators, the flowers are small but clustered in dense spikes, creating a beautiful visual effect with the silvery foliage. The Perovskia ‘Prime Time’ is distinguished by its great resilience. It withstands temperatures down to -15°C and is drought-resistant. Maintenance simply involves a light pruning in spring.
The Perovskia 'Prime Time' thrives in borders, edging, rockeries, or on the terrace, in cold climates, as well as by the sea. It grows well in pots to enhance the terrace or balcony. It is a must-have plant for low-water gardens, easy to combine with other plants for dry conditions. Its lavender flowering complements well with pink-flowered bushy sage, red-flowering bushy sage, or blue-flowering shrubby sage. Mix it with gauras and small border roses.
It is the colour of its flowering that earned this plant the nickname "Afghan Lavender", and its relation to sage that gave it other names such as "Russian sage" or "Afghanistan sage".

Botanical data
Place the Perovskia 'Prime Time' in full sun. It is a bush very resistant to drought, hardy, which also tolerates seaside conditions. Plant it in a light, fairly dry soil and above all well-drained. Limestone and very dry soils in summer are well tolerated, as are heavy frosts. This hardy plant is not afraid of slugs and has no enemies or diseases in our gardens. In early spring, prune the bush very short, to 10 cm from the ground.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
