Potentilla fruticosa Bella Apple - Shrubby cinquefoil
Usually I prefer to give a review after a year, once the plant is well established (or not), but this Potentilla Bella Apple that I received and planted yesterday is so lovely that I'm going to tell you right away! Nicely bushy and still with a few flowers. The colour is soft and warm at the same time. Planted next to white salvias, a small forsythia, loosestrifes, a white rose, and a St. John's Wort Magical Beauty, it should be perfect!

The Bella Apple Shrubby Cinquefoil is a cinquefoil from the 'Bella' series, composed of naturally compact varieties that do not require pruning. It offers a flowering with fruity tones of apricot, pale pink, and yellow. This small rounded bush has a long summer flowering, enhanced by its dense foliage. Easy to grow, very hardy, and low maintenance, it can be planted in flower beds or in large pots on the terrace. It is a highly rewarding plant, and almost foolproof in well-drained soil.
Potentilla fruticosa is a woody shrub that belongs to the Rosaceae family, just like roses. The variety 'Hachapp' Bella Apple was obtained and selected in Germany in 2014 by Holger Hachmann. It is therefore a particularly hardy shrub. 'Bella Apple' has a rounded bushy habit and particularly dense vegetation. At maturity, the plant will measure approximately 60 cm in height and 70 cm in width. Its slender and branched, brown stems, peel with age, and bear deciduous foliage that disappears in winter. The small size of the leaves, divided into narrow leaflets, gives a beautiful lightness to the bright green silhouette of this plant. The delicate flowers, rather large for a shrubby cinquefoil, are shaped like 4 cm wide cups, with five petals of changing colours. The centre of the flower is occupied by golden stamens. The abundant flowering, starting in June and lasting until the end of summer, is usually more intense at the beginning of the period and then loses some of its vigour during the season, depending on the dampness of the soil.
In full sun, cinquefoils will produce flowers with more vibrant colours, while in partial shade, the colour will be slightly less intense. Carefree plants, generous and beautifully coloured, cinquefoils are ideal for brightening up the garden or balcony, effortlessly and enduringly. With their Scottish rose-like appearance and their very modest requirements, they can be used in multiple ways and planted anywhere: in flower beds, rock gardens, borders, low hedges, containers... In most climates and in any well-drained soil. The 'Bella Apple' cinquefoil will be particularly stunning when combined with blue bushy salvias or red bushy salvias, yarrows, gauras, globe thistles, euphorbias, and low grasses. It pairs perfectly with lavenders, rockroses, and Helichrysum for a warm and fragrant atmosphere. It also blends well with dwarf or creeping conifers or ground cover and landscape roses. Cinquefoils create stunning large borders in front of a screen of evergreen shrubs.

Botanical data
A very easy-to-care-for plant, Potentilla fruticosa Bella Apple is hardy and can withstand very low temperatures (-20°C). It prefers a sunny or partially shaded exposure. Its only real requirement concerns the type of soil where it is planted as it requires ordinary soil, not too rich, and very well-drained. Heavy, clayey soils are not suitable. In this case, it is advisable to place it on a slope or in a rockery to promote water drainage. It is also possible to lighten the soil at the time of planting by adding coarse sand and gravel to improve drainage. Another quality to add to its list of accomplishments is its good tolerance to drought once established. The shrubby potentilla does not require much maintenance. Flowering on the current year's shoots, a simple annual pruning is sufficient to refresh it. It is recommended to cut back by half the stems that have borne flowers the previous year, just above a bud, in early spring, in order to stimulate new growth and maintain the beautifully bushy shape of your potentilla. It is also desirable to remove faded flowers as they appear during the flowering period to prolong the blooming for a long time.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
