Description

Prunus persica Taoflora Pink 'Mintao 11' is a recent and still rare Vietnamese hybrid. This graceful and resilient bush offers an early spring flowering that is not afraid of frost. The branches are covered with a profusion of bright pink double flowers before the leaf burst period. This peach tree bears small edible white peaches in late summer. Not demanding, it will find its place in all gardens and will adapt to all climates.

Prunus persica Taoflora Pink 'Mintao 11' belongs to the Rosaceae family. It is a variety obtained in Vietnam in 2007, whose ancestor, Prunus persica (Peach), is a species native to Shanxi, a province in northern China and Mongolia. This peach tree grows rapidly. Its adult size reaches 3 m (9.8 ft) in height and 2.5 m (8.2 ft) in width. It is a small deciduous bush with an arborescent and open habit. In March-April, numerous nectar-rich, pink, double flowers with a diameter of 5 cm to 6 cm (2 in to 2.4 in) appear along the branches. They are followed in September-October by small, wild and edible peaches (5 cm to 6 cm (2 in to 2.4 in)) with a fuzzy skin. The leaves are narrow, elliptical, and pointed, 12 cm to 15 cm (4.7 in to 5.9 in) long.

Prunus persica Taoflora Pink 'Mintao 11' can be planted as a solitary specimen or with other ornamental trees or bushes that also flower in the early days of spring: Prunus mume, Prunus cerasifera, Prunus triloba, Prunus x amygdalopersica (larger), Prunus tenella, and Prunus x cistena (dwarf). There is no shortage of choice among these flowering Prunus trees, which will create an enchanting scene. Note that its hardiness and resistance once established allow its cultivation in many situations.

In Asia, the flowering branches are offered as a sign of happiness in spring. Tao = Future, Flora = Flower. One can be inspired by this charming tradition by pruning a few well-budded branches to enjoy its graceful flowering in a bouquet at home.

Planting and care

Plant in any well-drained, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline soil. This small bush requires a sunny location. Very hardy, it will nevertheless need to be protected from strong winds, which could quickly deprive you of its magnificent flowering. It tolerates pruning well after flowering, in a ball or cube shape; indeed, its silhouette can be easily shaped. Treat against peach leaf curl when the leaves fall and during the bud burst period in spring.
