This young plant is a Christmas gift for a friend. I already have two in my garden and I know how it works. Two-thirds of this young plant has buds but one-third is without buds and without any signs of life. It's a shame. So far, you have always sent me lovely plants.

Description

Chinese Azalea 'Cannon's Double', also known as the Hybrid Rhododendron, is a small deciduous shrub, notable for its semi-double, rosy-white flowers edged with pink and with a yellow centre. It will delight you in spring and quickly become an essential feature in ericaceous beds.

Native to China, the 'Cannon's Double' Azalea has an upright habit and reaches a height of 1.20m (3 ft 11 in) and a spread of 90cm to 1m (2 ft 11in to 3 ft 3in) at maturity. The deciduous foliage, often absent at the base of the bush, is light green, oval, and flexible with prominent veins. In May and June, this shrub has an abundance of open, trumpet-shaped flowers grouped in dense terminal clusters that stand out from the foliage. These semi-double, white flowers with pink margins and yellow centres are a must for your garden!

Hardy down to -15°C (5°F), the Chinese Azalea 'Cannon's Double' needs a bright spot, away from direct sunlight. Ideally, it should be planted in semi-shade, in a location protected from cold, drying winds. This slow-growing, little ericaceous shrub likes moist, humus-rich, aerated, acid soil.

Plant the 'Cannon's Double' Azalea in ericaceous beds, on a slope, in a shady rockery, or in the middle of a border alongside Pieris, heathers, Kalmias, Japanese Pieris, and Japanese maple.

Divided into 2 horticultural groups, the Rhododendron genus includes on one hand Chinese and Japanese Azaleas, with small evergreen or deciduous leaves, and 5 stamens per flower, and on the other hand Rhododendrons, with ample, evergreen, glossy foliage, and flowers with more than 10 stamens. Although highly debatable from a botanical point of view, this classification is still widely used by horticulture professionals.

Planting and care

Plant Cannon's Double Chinese Azalea in partial shade, protected from cold, drying winds, in light, moist, humus-rich, acid soil. Like all plants in the Ericaceous family, it cannot tolerate chalky or heavy soils that become waterlogged in winter. Dig a hole three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-chalky water and plant it level with the soil surface, in a mixture composed of 1/4 coir, leaf mould, horticultural grit or perlite, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system, which makes them vulnerable to long periods of drought. Therefore, it is advisable to enrich the soil with humus and water copiously during dry periods. Additionally, this root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with free-draining materials (horticultural grit, perlite, clay pellets) at planting. Apply a mulch of shredded pine bark around the base of the shrub every spring to maintain soil moisture and acidity. Maintenance consists of removing faded flowers in summer and clearing out dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils, which eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, and by the famous "Rhododendron lace bug", though not often causing significant damage. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendrons indicates poor iron uptake from the soil and leads to premature plant death. While lime is often the cause, poorly drained soil or deeply planted root balls can also explain the phenomenon.
