Description

The 'Jolie Madame' Chinese Azalea, also known as the Hybrid Rhododendron, is a deciduous bush, notable for its slightly scented and deep pink-orange coloured flowering, all set against a vibrant green foliage. This combination will soften your flower beds and hedges.

Native to China, the 'Jolie Madame' Azalea has an upright habit and reaches a height of 1.50 m (4 ft 11 in) with a 1 m (3 ft 4 in) spread at maturity. Its foliage is a beautiful vibrant green, with oval and flexible leaves, which turn reddish-purple and orange In autumn. During the months of April and May, the foliage will enhance the cyclamen pink blooms with hints of orange in terminal clusters, with well-developed pistils and stamens. In spring, it will bring a fragrant note to the garden. Its brown stems will stand out against the leaves and flowers, making the flowering more intense. A rendez-vous not to be missed!

Hardy down to -15°C and vigorous, the 'Jolie Madame' Chinese Azalea will appreciate full sun or partial shade exposure. This evergreen bush thrives in cool, humus-rich, and well-draining acidic soil.

Plant the 'Jolie Madame' Azalea in heather soil flowerbeds, on a slope, rock garden, or at the edge of a flower bed, to enjoy its fragrance and bright flowering, accompanied by Pieris, Heathers, Kalmias, Andromedas, and Japanese Maple.

Divided into 2 horticultural groups, the Rhododendron genus includes on one hand Chinese and Japanese Azaleas, with small evergreen or deciduous leaves, and 5 stamens per flower, and on the other hand Rhododendrons, with large, evergreen and glossy foliage, and flowers with more than 10 stamens. Although highly debatable from a botanical point of view, this classification is still widely used by horticultural professionals.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Jolie Madame' Chinese Azalea in a semi-shaded position, protected from cold and drying winds, in cool, humus-rich, and light soil with an acidic tendency. Like all plants that prefer acid soil, it cannot tolerate limestone or heavy soil that become waterlogged in winter. Dig a hole three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-limestone water and plant the bush at its base level in a mixture of 1/4 each of turf, leaf compost, gravel or pumice, and loam. Water thoroughly and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have shallow root systems, making them susceptible to long periods of drought. Therefore, it is advisable to enrich the soil with humus and provide abundant watering during dry periods. Additionally, their root system is not very strong, so it is essential to lighten heavy soil with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay pellets) during planting. Apply a mulch of crushed pine bark around the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture and an acidic pH. Maintenance involves removing faded flowers in summer and clearing dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils, which eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, as well as the infamous 'rhododendron beetle', which rarely causes severe damage. You can treat them with carbofuran. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendrons indicates poor iron assimilation in the soil and can lead to premature death of the plant. While limestone is often the cause, poorly drained soil or planting too deep can also explain this phenomenon.
