Description

The 'Johanna' Japanese Azalea, also known as Hybrid Rhododendron, is an evergreen upright shrub that stands out with its deep red flowers and dark green foliage. It will brighten up your borders and pots.

Originally from Japan, the 'Johanna' Azalea forms a small, dense bush with an upright habit, reaching 60 cm (23.6 in) in height and 50 cm (19.7 in) in width at maturity. Its persistent, ovate, glossy, and leathery leaves are dark green, turning purple in autumn. During the months of April and May, this small bush produces numerous trumpet-shaped flowers with a diameter of 5 cm. They are beautifully coloured in deep red. A highly anticipated event in the garden.

Hardy down to -17°C, the 'Johanna' Japanese Azalea prefers a bright exposure and should ideally be planted in partial shade, in a location protected from cold and dry winds. Slow growing, this small bush that thrives in cool, humus-rich, well-drained soil with acidic tendencies.

The 'Johanna' Azalea dresses up heathland borders all year round and brings gardens to life in spring with its colourful flowers. Plant it on a slope, in a shady rock garden, or at the edge of a border alongside Pieris, Heather, Kalmias, Andromedas, Chinese Azaleas, and Japanese Maple.

Divided into 2 horticultural groups, the Rhododendron genus includes, on one hand, both Chinese and Japanese Azaleas, with small persistent or deciduous leaves, each flower having 5 stamens, and on the other hand, Rhododendrons, with a large, persistent, glossy foliage and flowers with more than 10 stamens. Although highly debatable from a botanical point of view, this classification is still widely used by horticulture professionals.

Planting and care

Plant the Japanese Azalea 'Johanna' in a semi-shaded position, protected from cold and drying winds, in cool, humus-rich, and light soil with an acidic tendency. Like all plants that prefer acid soil, it cannot tolerate limestone or heavy soil that become waterlogged in winter. Dig a hole three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-limestone water and plant the bush at its base level in a mixture of 1/4 each of turf, leaf compost, gravel or pumice, and loam. Water thoroughly and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have shallow root systems, making them susceptible to long periods of drought. Therefore, it is advisable to enrich the soil with humus and provide abundant watering during dry periods. Additionally, their root system is not very strong, so it is essential to lighten heavy soil with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay pellets) during planting. Apply a mulch of crushed pine bark around the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture and an acidic pH. Maintenance involves removing faded flowers in summer and clearing dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils, which eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, as well as the infamous 'rhododendron beetle', which rarely causes severe damage. You can treat them with carbofuran. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendrons indicates poor iron assimilation in the soil and can lead to premature death of the plant. While limestone is often the cause, poorly drained soil or planting too deep can also explain this phenomenon.
