Description

Rhododendron or Azalea Oxydol is a hybrid bush with an upright habit, forming a clump. Its flowering occurs in spring during the month of May before the foliage appears. It produces large trumpet-shaped flowers in a cream-white colour with saffron speckles on the inside. The flowers have wavy edges and cluster together.

The foliage of the Azalea is deciduous. It consists of abundant small leaves with prominent veins, which turn yellow in autumn. They measure 5 to 6 cm (2 - 2.4 in) in length and are elongated. This foliage is a decorative feature in autumn.

Measuring 1.50 m (4 in 11 ft) in height at maturity, it is a very hardy plant. The Azalea mollis is native to China. It is suitable for both Ericaceous beds and as a solitary plant in a pot on a balcony, terrace, or conservatory.

Planting and care

Rhododendron Oxydol can tolerate a sunny location unlike the Japanese Azalea, but its preferred exposure is partial shade. Plant it in ericaceous soil, moist but well-drained and especially non-chalky. During planting, make sure not to bury the root ball too deep, it should be at ground level. Water abundantly during dry periods, at least once a week for the first year. In spring, apply fertilizer for acid-loving plants. After flowering you can prune lightly to keep the plant neat, but it is not essential. Remove faded flowers to encourage new shoots. The Azalea has few diseases when well-established outdoors. It can be attacked by weevils that eat the edge of the leaves and rootlets, as well as by the famous "rhododendron beetle" which rarely causes damage. If the soil is chalky, if the plant is planted too deep or if the soil is poorly drained, the leaves may turn yellow.
