Rhododendron planted a few years ago in acidic, humus-rich and moist soil. Partial shade exposure. This rhododendron has spread, layering here and there, 3 metres (10 feet) in diameter at present and 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) in height. In spring, a spectacular flowering of many small mauve/violet flowers. After a few years, it started to bloom again in autumn (only a few flowers). The pictures don't quite capture the beauty of the colours. It is a magnificent bush!

An adorable rock garden Rhododendron, with a dense and spreading habit, adorned with small violet flowers that fade to mauve-blue over time. They bloom in April, on young evergreen foliage of a blue-green hue that remains decorative all year round. This young plant is superb in the garden or in a pot on a terrace. It is best planted in partial shade, in acidic soil and in a humid climate.

Description

The 'Azurika' Dwarf Rhododendron has inherited from its parent, the Rhododendron impeditum, a compact and slightly spreading habit, small evergreen foliage with grey-green-blue reflections and a beautiful spring flowering with rich shades of violet. In this lovely variety, violet buds are accompanied by fully open flowers with long brown stamens that gradually transition from deep blue-violet to mauve-blue, creating a delightful colour scheme throughout the inflorescence and even the bush itself. A small size well suited for restricted spaces and excellent hardiness are among the other advantages of 'Azurika'. Whether in the ground or in pots, plant it in partial shade in light, moist, and limestone-free soil.

'Azurika' Rhododendron is a plant belonging to the heath family, adapted to acidic soils and rather humid and cool climates. It is a small hybrid variety, highly resistant to cold like its ancestor from the Chinese mountains. It forms a small bush with a dense and well-branched habit, not exceeding 60cm (24in) in height and 90cm (35in) in width. Its branches carry small evergreen leaves, oval to elliptical in shape, with a dull green-grey-blue colour, much lighter on the underside. Its growth is slow, its vegetation is dense, and its foliage is elegant, making it a truly present feature in the garden all year round. However, it is in April-May (sometimes as early as March in mild climates) that it stands out thanks to its generous flowering with a rare colour. The bell-shaped flowers, about 6-7cm (2-3in) wide, are clustered at the ends of numerous stems. Starting as dark violet buds, they open into dark blue-violet tones that gradually lighten to mauve.

This modest-sized bush will be ideal in a moist rock garden, as a border plant or in a container, provided it has suitable soil and climate; "rhodos" are as charming as they are exclusive! Its blue-violet colour complements the pastel tones of hydrangeas (the choice is vast, from white to pink, including blue), the colourful young shoots of Pieris, and the red-purple and garnet hues, such as those of the foliage of the Japanese maple 'Atropurpureum' or the flowers of Loropetalum chinense 'Fire Dance'. Its cool-toned flowering perfectly complements that of pink rhododendrons like 'Dream Land', orange ones (Fire Ball), or why not the tender yellow of the variety Saffron Queen. For a contemporary-inspired scene or a garden with a minimalist style, it is best to combine it with white flowers and foliage, such as white Bleeding Heart and the coppery foliage of the Japanese shield fern (Dryopteris erythrosora).

Planting and care

Plant the dwarf Rhododendron 'Azurika' in a semi-shaded position, away from burning sun, protected from cold and drying winds, in a moist, humus-rich and light soil with a tendency towards acidity. If the soil remains moist, it can tolerate a slightly sunnier exposure. Like all ericaceous plants, it cannot tolerate alkaline soils or heavy soils saturated with water in winter. The cultivation of rhododendrons is disappointing in the long term on an alkaline subsoil, even if an ericaceous pit is prepared for them, a practice often accompanied by watering with hard water, which should be avoided.

Dig a hole three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-limestone water and plant the bush at the level of the collar, in a mixture composed of leaf compost, gravel or pumice and loam. Water copiously and keep the soil moist in summer with mulching. Azaleas and rhododendrons have a shallow root system. Therefore, they dislike long periods of drought, as well as waterlogged and suffocating soils. That is why humus-enriched soil and abundant watering during dry periods are recommended. In addition, this root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay pellets) when planting.

Apply a mulch of crushed pine bark at the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture while preserving an acidic pH. Maintenance consists of removing faded flowers in summer and removing any dead branches.

Azaleas and rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils that eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, as well as the famous "rhododendron beetle" which does not often cause severe damage. Yellowing of leaves (chlorosis) in rhododendrons indicates poor assimilation of iron from the soil and premature death of the plant. While limestone rising from deep layers of the soil is often the cause, poorly drained soil or a root ball planted too deeply can also explain this phenomenon.
