Rhododendron 'Scarlet Wonder' is a small-sized hybrid with large red flowers, an evergreen bush that is quite hardy and can tolerate sun and even heat in moist soil. With its large brilliant flowers of an uncompromising cardinal red, it is perfect for bringing life to the garden in spring. Its dark green and satin-like, evergreen foliage is interesting even outside of the flowering period. This popular variety, one of the best in its category, has been awarded in England by the RHS for its ornamental qualities and performance in the garden. Stunning in an ericaceous bed or in a large container, in partial shade or even in full sun!
Â
Rhododendrons are plants from the heather family, preferring mostly limestone-free soil, with an acidic tendency, and humid climates. 'Scarlet Wonder' naturally forms a dense, rounded and spreading bush, just over a metre in height and width after many years but its growth is rather slow. It generally reaches 70-80 cm (28-32in) in height and 1 m (3ft) in width at the age of 10. Its evergreen leaves are very dark green with a satin finish, elliptical in shape and cover the plant well. They have a very velvety underside. In May, its remarkably abundant flowering submerges the bush: grouped in loose corymbs of 4 to 7 beautiful large campanulate flowers with wavy edges. Their bright red colour is enhanced by the shiny texture of the petals. Â
Â
Rhododendron 'Scarlet Wonder' is a brilliant bush, hardy down to -15°C or even -20°C and easy to grow as long as the conditions suit it, in terms of soil and climate. Even though they prefer partial shade, hybrid Rhododendrons with large flowers can tolerate the sun as long as it's not scorching and their base remains cool. "Scarlet Wonder", with its generous and resplendent flowering, will elegantly adorn a small shaded area of the garden, terrace, or balcony. It can be planted, for example, alongside Ferns, blue or variegated Hostas, Pieris, Heathers, Kalmias, Azaleas, Japanese Maples, or other dwarf rhododendrons to create stunning patchworks of textures and colours in spring. Growing in a container requires regular watering with non-limestone water and specific fertilizer for ericaceous plants.

Botanical data
Plant 'Scarlet Wonder' Rhododendron in a semi-shaded position, protected from cold and drying winds, in moist, humus-rich and light soil, with an acidic or neutral tendency. Like all ericaceous plants, it does not tolerate limestone soils or heavy soils saturated with water in winter. If the soil remains moist in summer, this rhododendron can also tolerate exposure to non-burning sunlight. Avoid planting at its base, as its shallow roots do not tolerate competition from other plants, especially for water resources.
Dig a hole three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-limestone water and plant the bush at collar level, in a mixture composed of soil, leaf compost, gravel or pumice, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system. Therefore, they dislike long periods of drought. That is why humus-enriched soil and abundant watering during dry periods are recommended. In addition, this root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay pellets) at planting. Apply a mulch of crushed pine bark at the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture while keeping an acidic pH.
Maintenance consists of removing faded flowers and dead branches in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils that eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, as well as the famous "rhododendron beetle" which does not often cause significant damage. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendrons indicates poor assimilation of iron in the soil and can lead to premature plant death. While limestone is often the cause, poorly drained soil or deeply planted root balls can also explain the condition.
Rhododendrons thrive in northern climates when planted in limestone-free soil and a humid environment. Their cultivation in hotter and drier climates is often doomed to failure in the long run, despite all the efforts made to acclimatize them.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).

Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
