Description

Ribes sanguineum 'Johannie PinkPomp' is a variety of flowering currant that is interesting for its early and abundant bright pink flowering, which is visible on its leafless brown stems. It forms pendulous clusters, often as early as the end of March. It is an ornamental shrub that is highly resistant to cold and not very demanding in terms of soil. It can be grown in containers or in the ground, integrated into a shrub bed or a small hedge.

Ribes sanguineum 'Johannie PinkPomp' is a bushy shrub with a spreading habit, reaching a height and width of 1.5 to 1.8m. It has a moderately fast growth rate. Its pendulous clusters of slightly fragrant flowers are a deep and vibrant carmine pink, appearing between March and April before the foliage emerges. They are highly visited by early pollinating insects. The foliage is composed of simple, medium green leaves with a pleasant aroma when crushed. The bark of this shrub is quite inconspicuous, but its black fruits with a white bloom, measuring 7 to 8mm in diameter, although not very numerous, are quite interesting later in the season. In autumn, this deciduous shrub loses its leaves to better withstand the cold, down to approximately -20°C.

The 'Johannie PinkPomp' flowering currant is a shrub suitable for inexperienced gardeners, similar to Forsythias or Weigelas. It can be planted in a large shrub bed or a small informal hedge, alongside a 'Jet Trail' Japanese quince, an 'Elegantissima' white dogwood, a Lemoine mock orange, and a 'Crispa' Japanese spirea, for example. These plants will create a harmonious and colourful ensemble from spring to autumn.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Johannie PinkPomp' Flowering Currant in ordinary, deep soil, without excess limestone, rich and slightly moist. This bush will thrive in partial shade or in the sun, but in a non-scorching exposure. Soak the root ball in a bucket for fifteen minutes while you dig the planting hole (50 x 50 x 50 cm). Add some planting compost to the existing soil, position the root ball, backfill and water abundantly. Water during the first year during hot periods to promote rooting. Once well-rooted, the plant is relatively tolerant.

Pruning is not necessary, except to remove dead wood or correct a slightly sparse habit. Prune the branches by one third of their size, after flowering.

Care

Pruning instructions Maintenance pruning: if you just want to maintain the shape of the bush, remove weak or overly arched branches, as well as dead wood. Rejuvenation pruning: for subjects that have become too bulky or have lost their bushy shape (thinning at the base, sparse branches), it is advisable to prune the branches to 50 cm from the ground. This can be done all at once (rigorous pruning, for older subjects) or over three years (pruning one-third of the branches each year, ensuring a balanced appearance for the bush). The bush will then form new shoots.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time May to June
Soil moisture Moist soil
Disease resistance Very good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
