Description

Amelanchier spicata is a species covered with white flower spikes, followed by sweet and juicy berries, particularly recommended for creating informal hedges.

Widespread in Europe, this small, hardy and fast-growing bush has an open, rounded, compact, light and graceful habit. It has deciduous, elliptical, 8 cm (3 in) long, medium green foliage. Its pretty upright flower spikes, 6 to 8cm (2.5 to 3 in) long, white, appear in May and are followed by edible fruits, dark purple, 1 cm (0.4 in), juicy and sweet, perfect for jam.

Amelanchier spicata grows in any good well-drained, moist, even acidic soil in a sunny or partially shaded site. This variety does not tolerate alkaline soil. Water and mulch to keep the soil moist. Prune in February by eliminating suckers and old stems to aerate and balance the branches.

Amelanchier spicata can be planted alone at the back of a flower bed, with perennials, but it is especially recommended for the creation of  informal and country-style hedges.

Planting and care

Amelanchier spicata is planted in spring or autumn in any good, well-drained, moist, non-alkaline or even acidic soil, in sun or partial shade. Water and mulch to keep the soil moist. Prune in February by eliminating the suckers and old stems to aerate and balance the branches. To multiply it, you can separate the numerous suckers between the end of November and the beginning of March. Beware of powdery mildew! Spray a sulphur-based fungicidal if the spring is mild and wet.
