Styrax obassia

Styrax obassia is a very ornamental deciduous species native to Japan and northeastern China. It is adorned with large, beautiful, tender green leaves and long, fragrant flowering clusters. Hardy and rustic, it is ideal for planting alongside a path, terrace, or near the entrance of a house to enjoy its fragrance.

Belonging to the Styracaceae family, this bushy to erect shrub reaches a maximum height of 7 m (23 f) and has a spread of 5 m or 6 m (16.4 ft to 19.7 ft). The leaves, with a slightly shiny tender green colour, appear in spring. They can measure up to 20 cm (7.9 in) in length. It is their abruptly acuminate tip that makes this species unique. They resemble those of a lime tree but with a more rounded shape. In autumn, the foliage turns a bright yellow colour, prolonging its decorative appeal. During May and June, the abundant flowering takes the form of 20 cm (7.9 in) clusters composed of delicate bell-shaped flowers. The fragrance is reminiscent of Halesias. The fruits that follow the flowering are ovoid, measuring 2 cm (0.8 in) and have a slight pruinose appearance. The smooth grey-brown bark reveals vertical fissures with age.

Easy to cultivate, Styrax thrives in rich, moist, acidic to neutral, humus-bearing, and well-draining soils. Introduced to Europe in 1879, it has good hardiness. It guarantees the gardener a pleasant and light spring atmosphere. Plant it as a standalone specimen or in a grove alongside Sorbus, Halesia, Tilia, Aesculus, or Robinia. It will thrive in a sunny or partially shaded position.
