More information

This lilac is a deciduous bush that will reach 1.20 m to 1.50 m in all directions. In late spring, it produces clusters of dark pink buds that open into delicate pale pink lilac flowers with a sweet fragrance. Its light and fresh green foliage, turns powdery red to violet shades in autumn before falling. This variety, easy to grow, also stands out for its exceptional cold resistance (down to -30 °C at least).

Description

The Little Lady™ hybrid lilac (Syringa First Editions® Little Lady™ 'Jeflady') is a compact bush with charming pretty clusters of fragrant lilac pink flowers and colourful autumn foliage. Compact and undemanding, this little lilac can be planted in gardens or large pots on the terrace. Particularly hardy, it can be grown in regions with harsh winters.

The Little Lady™ lilac belongs to the oleaceae family, like all lilacs. This hybrid variety was selected in Canada by Jeffries Nursery, specifically for its robustness and adaptability to cold climates. The plant resembles 'Miss Kim' but its growth is more compact. The Little Lady™ lilac has an upright and rounded habit, with moderate growth. When mature, around the age of 10, the bush reaches a height and width of 1.20 to 1.50 m, depending on growing conditions. It blooms in May-June, depending on the climate. Its abundant inflorescences are composed of dark pink buds that open into delicate mauve or lilac pink flowers. These sweetly scented flowers attract butterflies and beautifully contrast with the light and fresh green foliage. In autumn, the leaves take on a powdery red to violet hue before falling.

The flowers of Syringa 'Little Lady' are smaller and thinner than those of classic lilacs, but they are more numerous and delightfully fragrant. It is almost impossible to resist the urge to make a beautiful scented bouquet for the home. Its compact habit makes it suitable for small gardens. It will also please gardeners who have had a bad experience with a common lilac that grows exuberantly, produces suckers, and is a bit too bulky. It will find its place in every garden and can also flower on terraces, in a container, with regular feeding and watering. To accompany it in a flower bed, choose other small shrubs, such as an abelia, 'Annelies' shrub rose, 'Nahno Purple' butterfly bush, and Choisya 'Scented Gem'.

Planting and care

Syringa 'Little Lady' appreciates full sun, in deep soil that remains fairly moist and well-drained. It can tolerate any type of soil. It will grow well in partially shaded areas, but flowering will be reduced. Easy to grow, it only requires mulching in summer and occasional watering in dry climates to maintain some moisture. Water it in the first few years in case of significant drought. You can prune the flowering branches to make beautiful bouquets, or at the end of flowering to avoid exhausting the bush. Avoid severe pruning that limits the following spring's flowering, unless your lilac becomes too large.
