This pink lilac from the Dutch Flowerfesta series is a bush cultivated for its dwarf, compact habit and exceptional floriferous! Very flowerful in April-May, it continues in early autumn, especially if care is taken to prune the faded inflorescences. Its clusters of single flowers are deliciously scented and are more abundant and larger than in the type species. Ideal for small gardens, it can also be cultivated in pots on the terrace or balcony. Perfectly hardy, simply offer it a sunny to semi-shaded exposure and a fertile and drained soil, preferably neutral to lime.

Description

The Syringa Flowerfesta 'Pink', like all the lilacs in the new Flowerfesta series, is a very hardy bush, small in size, floriferous, perpetual and fragrant, perfectly suited to small gardens and pot cultivation to decorate the terrace or balcony. Its clusters of single flowers are pink and emit a sweet and pleasant fragrance. They are larger than those of most Syringa meyeri varieties and are produced abundantly in spring, sometimes more sporadically during the summer and very often again in September-October. Low maintenance, water-efficient, it will also look good in a small flowering hedge, planted in a group or even as a standalone near the house.

The lilac Flowerfesta 'Pink' is a recent horticultural achievement, belonging to a series of lilacs developed in recent years in the Netherlands. It is derived from Syringa meyeri, native to Northern China, although it has never been found in the wild. The bushes in the Flowerfesta series have been selected for their colour, floribundity, the size of their inflorescences and their strong perpetual character. They come in white, pink and purple. All these plants belong to the Oleaceae family.

This lilac naturally forms a rounded, compact and ramified bush, as wide as it is high. As an adult, it will not exceed 1.25 m (4 ft 1 in) in all directions. Its growth is quite slow, encouraged by rich and fresh soil. This variety blooms from a young age, abundantly in April-May, a few days before common lilacs, in the form of pleasantly fragrant pyramidal thyrsus, 10 to 14 cm (3.9 to 5.5 in) long, composed of small single flowers, pink in colour, darker in buds. These inflorescences are grouped in bouquets at the end of the previous year's shoots, then again at the end of summer or early autumn, at the end of the current year's branches. This flowering attracts many butterflies and foraging insects. Its foliage is deciduous, and composed of small elliptical leaves 2 to 4 cm (0.8 to 1.6 in) long, of a medium green.

Whether it's the perfume, colour, childhood memories or even the symbol of a significant event, everyone has a good reason to love lilacs, as endearing as they are unpretentious. The Flowerfesta 'Pink' Lilac fits right into a small garden or on a terrace, everywhere where space is valued. Perfectly hardy, easy to grow in ordinary but free-draining soil, even in cold or dry regions, low maintenance, it adapts to all garden styles and all our climates. It is a major element for creating a scent garden, its flowering accompanying that of cytisus, pink or white brooms. It can also be planted in large borders, in groups, standalone or as a free hedge mixed with other trees (flowering apple trees, Japanese cherry trees, Chinese almond trees, forsythias, Japanese quinces, Deutzias...). Its deliciously fragrant clusters are appreciated in spring bouquets, in the company of the first garden irises, early peonies, campanulas and ranunculus.

Planting and care

The Syringa Flowerfesta 'Pink' is planted from November to March and from September to June. It adapts to any ordinary soil, but it prefers deep, loose, not too dry, even calcareous soils. An application of a complete fertiliser every year at the start of the vegetation is recommended. It is preferable to install it in full sun or in light shade in a warm climate, as its flowering is better when it receives a maximum amount of light, and the winters are well contrasted. It is useful to cut the faded inflorescences after flowering to avoid fruiting, which is of no interest and exhausts the young plant. This will encourage a resurgence at the end of summer and more abundant flowering the following year. This variety flowers on the shoots of the previous year, but also on the branches of the current year. Pruning is not obligatory on this naturally compact variety. In all cases, avoid severe prunings that limit the flowering of the following spring.
