Description

The Syringa 'Prince Wolkonski', also known as Common Lilac, is a deciduous bush that displays numerous clusters of double, fragrant pink-violet flowers during spring. Its flowers are ideal for making bouquets.

Syringa 'Prince Wolkonski' is a bush with a rounded habit, reaching a height and spread of 4 to 7 m (13.12 to 22.96 ft). Its heart-shaped leaves, of medium green colour, appear in spring and are of a light green shade. From April to May, a 10 cm (3.9 in) paniculate flowering reveals itself. Its reddish-purple flower buds will open to reveal double and fragrant pink-violet flowers.

Easy to grow, the Common Lilac 'Prince Wolkonski' thrives in well-drained, dry to moist soils. Native to Southeast Europe, it has good hardiness (-15°C (5°F)). Plant it alone, in flowerbeds, or as a hedge paired with Forsythias, Viburnums, or Cotinus. It prefers a sunny site but can also tolerate partial shade.

Planting and care

Lilac appreciates full sun, in a soil that remains fairly moist and well-drained. It can tolerate any soil type, but prefers slightly alkaline soils and is sensitive to strongly acidic soils. It will grow well in partially shaded areas, but flowering will be reduced. Easy to grow, it only requires mulching in dry climates during the summer to retain some moisture. Water it during the first few years in case of significant drought. You can cut flowering stems to make beautiful bouquets, or remove faded blooms to encourage the appearance of new flowers and avoid exhausting the bush. Avoid severe pruning that will limit flowering the following spring, unless your Syringa is becoming too large.
