Excellent establishment confirmed after one year of cultivation. By the end of March, plenty of visible buds and the young plant has nearly doubled in size. Planted in a sunny location sheltered from strong winds.

Description

Viburnum x burkwoodii is a bush with a rounded and dense habit and dark green foliage. From April to May, it produces pink to white flowers. This flowering is both abundant and fragrant, with an intoxicating scent reminiscent of orange blossom. It is highly appreciated for its dual appeal of a beautiful spring flowering and stunning copper colours in autumn.

This variety is the result of cross-breeding between Viburnum carlesii and V. utile. It reaches a height of 2 to 2.5m (7 to 8ft). At the time of flowering, the bush bears abundant 10cm (4in) diameter flower clusters at the end of its branches. The pink flowers turn white as they mature, creating a subtle gradual colour gradient that stands out against its dark foliage. The flowers are followed in September-October by spherical fruits that are initially red and then turn black when ripe, prolonging their ornamental interest throughout part of winter. Its fruiting attracts birds. The semi-evergreen foliage takes on coppery hues in autumn.

Hardy down to -20°C (-4°F)
, Viburnum x burkwoodii can be used as a singular specimen to attract attention in small gardens, or as a hedge or in borders in larger gardens. Its inflorescences can be used for making bouquets. Consider planting it in a high-traffic area to fully enjoy its fragrance, such as under a window or near a door.

Planting and care

Evergreen down to -20°C (4°F), Viburnum x burkwoodii thrives in sunny or semi-shaded locations. Plant it in moist but well-drained soil. Depending on your soil type, adjust its pH with compost as it won't tolerate excessive limestone. During its initial establishment, ensure regular watering (except during freezing periods).
