Description

The Viburnum opulus 'Compactum' is a variety of guelder rose slightly more compact than the species from which it originates, making it easier to incorporate in small gardens, informal hedges or even as a decorative element in flower beds. The deciduous foliage is dark green and turns red in autumn, the cream-white flowers bloom from May to June and then give way to beautiful red berries sought after by birds.

Native to western Asia and western Europe, the Viburnum opulus is a bushy shrub which is very easy to grow and belongs to the adoxaceae family. The 'Compactum' variety is distinguished by its compact habit, forming a bush 1.5 (5 ft) to 2m (7 ft) in height and 1 to 1.5m (3ft - 5 in) in width. Its abundant flowers, which bloom from May to June, form beautiful flat corymbs, 8cm (3.1in) in diameter. A cream-white row of larger sterile flowers attracts pollinating insects to a core of smaller fertile flowers. This very generous flowering is followed by fruiting from September to October. The berries are spherical and measure 5mm (0.2in) in diameter, their bright red colour gives them undeniable decorative interest. They remain on the bush for a good part of the winter and guarantee visits from birds. The leaves, with 3 to 5 lobes, measure up to 10cm (3.9in) in length. The bark of this shrub is yellowish-grey.

Hardy down to -20°C (-4°F), Viburnum opulus 'Compactum' thrives in sunny or semi-shaded locations. It can be used as a standalone plant to attract attention in small gardens, as hedges or in flower beds in larger gardens. It is highly appreciated for its dual appeal, beautiful spring flowering and autumn colour. It is not very demanding and can thrive in relatively deep and moist soil. In a rustic atmosphere, create an informal hedge with an Acer campestre, shrubby honeysuckles, European spindle trees, and one or two botanical or old-fashioned roses.
