More information

This Telopea is a rare and original plant with its dark pink flowering. It forms globular inflorescences composed of tubular flowers surrounded by bracts of the same colour. This selection stands out for its compact habit and low growth for the genus. This evergreen bush is well suited to mild climate regions with a preference for poor soils and sun. In rich soils and humid summer climates, its cultivation can be delicate. Attention, Telopeas are technically demanding plants reserved for experienced gardeners. They have complicated cultivation requirements to meet (soil type, drainage, and climate).

Description

Telopea 'Essie's Gift' forms an evergreen and bushy spreading shrub that stands out for its low and compact growth. In May and June, even July, it is covered with spectacular, round, dark pink flowers. They make beautiful cut flowers. This plant adapts very well to mild climates, in sunny locations and in light and well-draining soil. Its cultivation can be delicate in overly rich soil and in humid summers.

From the proteaceae family, Telopea are woody plants native to Australia. In Aboriginal, they are called Waratah. 'Essie's Gift' is an Australian creation by Plant Management Australia. It stands out for its compact and low growth. It forms a bushy shrub that can reach 1 to 1.5 m in height and 1.5 to 2 m in spread. Its narrow, long leaves are dark green and persist throughout the year. Its round inflorescences consist of around a hundred tubular flowers grouped together in a ball and surrounded by bracts. They are excellent cut flowers.

Telopea 'Essie's Gift' is an original and exotic plant that requires delicate cultivation in humid climates. It will thrive in mild climates or in coastal gardens spared from heavy frosts and precipitation. It prefers light, well-draining soils that are slightly acidic and low in nitrates and phosphorus. It will find its place as a specimen plant, on a large slope, in a flowerbed, or in a large container, in a sheltered and sunny location. Pair it with Cordyline 'Charlie Boy' with its pink-edged foliage and Leucadendron 'Sundance'. Add a Leptospermum 'Coral Candy' to complete your exotic flowerbed.

Planting and care

Telopea 'Essie's Gift' thrives in the sun, sheltered from cold winds, in fertile, light, and well-drained soil, even sandy, acidic, or neutral. It dislikes limestone soils and those that are too wet in summer, which can lead to root rot. It needs water during the growing season, up until flowering, especially when grown in a pot. Preferably use rainwater. Do not use fertiliser, or only use a special protea type, low in nitrates and phosphates. Prune after flowering to maintain a compact habit. Its roots remain close to the surface, so it is best to avoid hoeing or moving your Telopea once it is established. In the ground, mulch with bark or pine needles.
