Description

Weigela florida 'Suzanne' is an ornamental bush appreciated for its generous pastel pink flowering and delicately variegated foliage. Hardy, vigorous, and easy to maintain, it is suitable for small gardens and container gardening. With its pale pink flowers and decorative foliage, the 'Suzanne' Weigela adds a touch of colour and refinement to any setting, from spring to autumn. This beautiful variety will find a place in all English or romantic-style borders.

Weigela florida 'Suzanne' belongs to the Caprifoliaceae family. With a rounded habit, this bush reaches a height and width of about 1.75 m in 10 years. Its growth is moderately fast with a dense and bushy habit. The leaves of this variety are light green with a fine cream or sometimes pink border. They turn various degrees of yellow before falling in autumn. The flowers appear abundantly in May-June, in the form of pale pink bells, and other flowers may reappear at the end of summer, depending on the climate. These flowers are particularly appreciated by bees and butterflies.

Weigela florida 'Suzanne' is a versatile bush that is suitable for gardens of all sizes and for growing in large containers. It can be planted in shrub borders, in a flowering hedge, or at the centre of a flower bed. To accompany it in the garden, for example, choose Cornus alba 'Elegantissima' with variegated foliage, Philadelphus 'Belle Étoile' for its fragrance, Japanese spirea 'Goldflame' for its golden foliage, and Hydrangea paniculata 'Diamantino' for its large fluffy panicle flowers that change from yellow-green to white and then pink. Together, these plants create a varied and decorative scene throughout the seasons.

Planting and care

Hardy down to -25°C, Weigela 'Suzanne' thrives in sunny locations that promote flower production. However, avoid scorching exposures that could damage its variegated foliage. Plant it in ordinary, well-drained soil that doesn't dry out too much in summer, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, from October to March (excluding the freezing period). To maintain a compact habit and encourage abundant flowering, prune back the branches that have carried spring flowers by 2/3, just after flowering. Weigela is an easy-to-grow bush in most regions, but it doesn't tolerate drought or sea spray.
