Within the plant kingdom, conifers are the champions of gigantism and longevity. In their natural environment, some species reach phenomenal dimensions. For example, in North America, a Sequoia sempervirens can reach a height of 115 metres (377 feet), some Pseudotsuga menziesii (Oregon Pine) reach up to 110 metres (361 feet), while a Picea sitchensis (Sitka Spruce) can grow to over 96 metres (315 feet) in height. Under our climate, large conifers fortunately maintain more reasonable proportions, which enable them to be accommodated in large gardens, either as standalone specimens or at the boundaries of the property.
