Description

Sherborne Daffodil is a spring plant that produces beautiful double flowers which are entirely yellow, clustered on long stems. These flowers emit a sweet fragrance. The deciduous leaves are sword-shaped with entire edges.

Daffodils are increasingly popular today as they are synonymous with spring. This Sherborn variety reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) when fully grown. Originally from the Mediterranean basin, this daffodil can be grown in flower beds, lawns, rockeries and pots. Its flowers can be cut for a vase, where it is best not to mix them with other flowers.

The Daffodil is toxic and does not tolerate bad weather such as rain, which damages the flower. Nevertheless, it is one of the most resilient autumn bulbs and a faithful plant that comes back every year. Narcissus features in a Greek legend in which a handsome young man rejected the love of the nymph Echo. As punishment, the gods caused him to love nothing more than his own reflection. When he perched above a fountain to drink, Narcissus saw his reflection and remained in contemplation of it until he drowned. He then transformed into a flower.

Planting and care

Plant daffodils in full sun or partial shade. They are easy to grow and will thrive in the shade of a woodland or a sunny flowerbed. They prefer moist but well-drained soil. Plant them in autumn, 15 cm (6in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart, in minimum clusters of 5 bulbs, in uniform or mixed colours. To plant them in the lawn: lift a patch of turf, dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20 cm (8in) (the height of a spade), place your bulbs, cover them with soil, and replace the turf. Choose a spot where you won't mow, as you must let the daffodil leaves wither before cutting them. This is when the bulb regenerates and prepares the flowers for the following year. However, remember to remove the flowers as soon as they have faded to prevent seed formation which would unnecessarily exhaust the bulb. Cut the leaves when they have turned yellow and apply fertiliser at that time, not before. Maintain regular watering during growth and then let the soil dry out once the foliage is mature.
