Description

The Narcissus 'White Lion' is a new variety with double flowers, offering large flowers with a layering of pure white petals enclosing a crinkled mix of yellow and white petals at the centre. A medium-sized spring bulb, it reaches a height of 45cm (18in) and blooms between April and May.

Narcissus are the most resilient bulbs planted in autumn. They tolerate both full sun and partial shade. They prefer well-drained soil but can also thrive in heavy soil.

For bouquets: We advise against mixing Narcissus with other flowers. Tulips, in particular, wilt quickly when in contact with Narcissus stems, as they contain a substance that causes this effect. You can reduce this harmful effect on other types of flowers by dipping the ends of the Narcissus stems in warm water for 1 to 2 minutes.

Narcissus come back every year. Unlike perennial plants, there is no need to fertilise before flowering. Only cut the leaves when they have turned yellow and apply fertiliser afterwards: this is when the bulb regenerates and prepares for next year's flowers.

Planting and care

The 'White Lion' daffodils bloom from April to May and come back every year. Very easy to grow, they thrive in both the shade of a woodland and a sunny flower bed. Plant them at a depth of 10 cm (4in) and spaced 10 cm (4in) apart. Group them in minimum clusters of 5 bulbs, in uniform colours or mixed. You can plant them in the short grass meadow. In this case, lift the patch of grass, dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20 cm (8in) (the height of a spade). Plant your bulbs, cover with soil and replace the grass. Choose a spot where you won't mow, as it is necessary to let the daffodil leaves wither before cutting them. It is at this moment that the bulb rebuilds itself and prepares the flowers for the following year. However, remember to remove the flowers as soon as they fade to prevent seed formation. This would unnecessarily deplete the bulb.
