Description

Daffodils are increasingly appreciated today because they are synonymous with spring. Narcissus W.P. Milner flowers from March to April. Each bulb develops several stems, each producing double and solitary flowers measuring 3 to 6 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter. These fragrant flowers are pale cream-white with a trumpet shape.

This very hardy plant has deciduous, sword-shaped, green leaves with entire edges. Narcissus W.P. Milner is known for its small size, reaching only 25 cm (10in). It is native to France, Switzerland, and Italy and perfect for flower beds, borders, rockeries, and woodlands. Being a dwarf narcissus that naturalises well, it is also ideal for wild gardens.

This daffodil holds up well as a cut flower. Its flowering period coincides with hyacinths and tulips. At the end of the flowering season, you can trim them at the same time as mowing the garden.

Planting and care

Plant Daffodils in full sun or partial shade in a light, fairly fertile, well-drained, neutral to acidic soil that remains moist during the growing season. Plant them in deep and firm soil at a depth of 15 cm (6in) and they will come back every year. After flowering, only cut back the foliage when it has withered, not before, as the bulb would not be able to rebuild itself and prepare the flowers for the following year. You can plant them in a container alongside perennials that will bloom later in the season. Daffodils can be susceptible to narcissus fly and eelworms in large-scale cultivation, but this will not impact them in the garden. Beware of slugs, collar rot, and various fungal diseases and viruses (yellow streaks).
