Description

Allium moly, or golden garlic, blooms in late spring in June. It produces dense and compact umbels measuring 5cm (2in) in diameter, which stand erect on bare stems. These umbels contain about 30 bright gold star-shaped flowers. They are composed of 6 tepals. These flowers produce globose fruits. The anthers (where the pollen is enclosed) are yellow.

Golden garlic's greyish-green foliage is deciduous. It is used in cooking. Each stem bears one to three lanceolate leaves, measuring 15 to 35mm (1in) in width and 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in) in length. They originate from the base and are shorter than the stem. The perennial itself reaches a height of 25cm (10in) at maturity.

Originating from southwest Europe (France, Spain), Allium moly is very hardy and can be planted anywhere in your garden to live for several years. It naturalises well in rocky areas or near large trees and in meadows. It is also found along borders of flower beds, in rock gardens, and even in walls. It can be grown in groups or as a solitary plant. It is suitable for container gardening and can enhance your balconies and patios. The beautiful star-shaped flowers are ideal to create stunning bouquets, even with dried blooms.

Planting and care

Allium moly is easy to grow. It does not tolerate extreme cold, but prefers warm conditions in the garden in a warm climate. Ideally, plant it in late October, 10cm (4in) deep with a spacing of 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) between bulbs. Place it in rich, light, moist or dry and well-drained soil. Keep the soil dry throughout the summer resting period. It dislikes humidity. If the soil is not sandy, place it in a rockery or remove the bulbs in July to replant them in September. Cut off the faded flowers at their base, leaving the stem, and remove the foliage once it has turned yellow. Be aware of onion flies, powdery mildew, and white rot.
