Description

A highly visual collection that brings together ornamental garlics of various heights, with umbels of flowers of varying sizes, in a beautiful gradient from white to pink-violet. Chosen for their ease of cultivation, these Alliums allow you to create height variations in flower beds and borders, as well as creating beautiful pots for the terrace or balcony. Plant these bulbs in full sun, in well-draining soil, either in the ground or in pots. Enhance your bouquets with fresh or dried flowers: they will add an original touch.

The Bubble Gum Collection consists of:

3 Allium Globemaster: the most floriferous, the tallest and the largest! This allium forms flower balls of 18 cm (7 in) in diameter in a beautiful violet-pink colour, on a 90 cm (35 in) tall stem. (Size 20+.) Blooms in May-June.

3 Allium stipitatum album: tightly packed umbels, white in colour, reaching up to 10 cm (4 in) in diameter, standing at 1.2 m (4 ft) above the ground on a sturdy stem that allows it to withstand the wind, like tall grasses. (Size 14+.) Blooms in May-June.

2 Allium macleanii (or elatum): it bears dense umbels of 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) in diameter, where star-shaped flowers in a lovely lilac-pink colour are tightly packed. This allium can reach a height of 80 cm (32 in). (Size 14+.) Blooms in May-June.

Alliums are herbaceous perennial plants with bulbs, belonging to the Alliaceae or Amaryllidaceae family depending on the classification. Their flowering in spherical umbels on stiff stems brings height and a beautiful touch of originality to any setting. Their foliage generally develops prior to flowering, in spring: the bulbs form a rosette of large green and lush leaves, which fade as the flowers bloom in May-June or sometimes in June-July depending on the region. The globular inflorescence is composed of numerous small star-shaped flowers with 6 petals of varying colours depending on the varieties. These non-fragrant flower heads remain decorative in flower beds for a long time once pollinated. The bulb replenishes its reserves after flowering and produces numerous daughter bulbs, allowing for rapid multiplication.

On its own, ornamental garlic has little appeal, but when combined with other perennials in shades of white, pink, and blue in large flower beds, it becomes truly remarkable. Perfect in a contemporary-style setting, it is irreplaceable in a romantic mixed border, nestled in a carpet of Nepeta 'Six Hill Giant' or Stachys byzantina, among herbaceous peonies with large flowers such as: 'Break a Day' or 'Bowl of Beauty', or against a backdrop of roses with abundant pink flowers: 'Eglantyne', 'Heritage' or 'Mary Rose'. In any case, consider accompanying it with low, shrubby plants that will hide its base, which becomes unsightly once the foliage has dried up. For a more "dynamic" effect, its flowers can structure a modern garden where several geometric shapes oppose each other. For example, it can be associated with Stipa tenuissima, lavender, and cone-shaped trimmed boxwood.

In short, the possibilities are endless and there is definitely a corner of your garden where this Bubble Gum Collection will create a sensation!

Planting and care

Ornamental alliums are relatively easy-to-grow plants in sunny areas and light, well-drained soil. However, they do require some soil moisture throughout their growth and flowering period, as well as immediately after flowering to allow the bulb to replenish its reserves and multiply. It should be noted that hotter regions (such as Mediterranean regions), where the soil naturally dries up from June onwards, are not very favourable for the long-term survival of certain Allium species, including 'Globemaster', which may tend to disappear over the years. This will always be the case for the magnificent descendants of Allium giganteum, which is not native to arid regions in summer, but rather to mountainous and rocky regions that receive more precipitation in early summer.

It is best to plant them before the end of October so that your Alliums have time to establish themselves. They dislike winter moisture in clayey and waterlogged soils. Give them a sunny spot in well-drained soil, even if it is rocky or enriched with gravel. Plant them at a depth of 10 cm (4 in), spaced 15 cm (6 in) apart for larger bulbs. Plant them at a depth of 10 cm (4 in), spaced 7 cm (3 in) apart for smaller bulbs. Planting them in a 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 in) pocket of pure sand proves effective in preventing bulb rot.
