Description

Camassia cusickii is a perennial bulbous plant with a dense erect tuft. This plant, which blooms in moist meadows and along stream banks, grows quite rapidly. From May to June, spikes measuring 20 to 40 cm (8 to 16in) long produce around a hundred small star-shaped light blue flowers. These flowers measure 5 cm (2in) in diameter and are composed of 6 petals and 6 long yellow stamens.

They usually last for three weeks, succeeding Camassias leichtinii. They come back stronger every year. The long leaves of the Camassia measure from 40 to 80 cm (16 to 32in) long. They are linear with undulate margins and their colour is green to blue-green.

Camassia cusickii grows up to 80 cm (32in) long. This hardy perennial is native to Oregon in the northeastern United States. It can be found in borders and flowerbeds as well as in rocky gardens. The flowers are also very beautiful in vases. Camassia cusickii pairs well with the bleeding heart.

Planting and care

Camassia cusickii enjoys a sunny exposure in very moist soil or partially shaded in damp soil. The soil must also be well-drained. Plant the bulbs in the autumn at a depth of 10 cm (4in) and keep a spacing of 15 cm (6in) between the bulbs. Camassia does not tolerate excessive moisture. Mulch in winter in regions subjected to prolonged frost. During dry summers, water the plant well. Black aphids and slugs love this plant. Take appropriate treatment in case of attack.
