I am very disappointed. This Fritillaria imperialis Lutea - Crown imperial never saw the light of day, and neither did the Fritillaria imperialis Rubra - Crown imperial (7.90 + 17.50, totaling 25.40€, left underground, that's quite a serious amount, what do you suggest as a replacement? Only the Fritillaria imperialis Prolifera - Crown imperial bloomed, but quickly withered away in just a couple of days.

Description

Fritillaria imperialis 'Lutea', known as crown imperial, is a delicate fritillary with yellow bell-shaped flowers. It reaches a height of 90cm (35in).

This perennial bears shiny, linear, green leaves. Its stalk displays approximately 5 trailing bell-shaped flowers arranged in a crown. This rigid stem is topped with a plume of dark green, shiny leaves that resemble the foliage at the base.

This fritillary thrives in moist but well-drained soils, even poor ones. The bulb's bug-like scent repels moles but not mice. A gravel bed at planting can provide partial protection against rodents. Growing it in a deep, well-drained pot and keeping it in a cold greenhouse during winter is more suitable for rare species.

Fritillaria Imperialis 'Lutea' looks spectacular in mass plantings with green and white or yellow Viridiflora tulips.

Planting and care

Fritillaria imperialis 'Lutea' thrives in full sun. It needs light but not necessarily direct sunlight. It ideally thrives in a continental climate where winters and summers are dry and springs are humid. Plant it in fertile and well-drained soil. Avoid heavy soil as it may lead to the appearance of fungi. If drainage is insufficient, the fritillary may rot. Plant it from September to October, adding sand, gravel or pumice to the planting hole. Place the bulb at a depth of 20cm (8in). In winter, we recommend mulching the fritillary. Remove the faded flowers if you do not want them to self-seed. Do not water your fritillaries in summer and winter. If the soil is too dry in spring, lightly water (without excess) to start the bulb.
