Description

Fritillary sewerzowii, also known as Korolkowia sewerzowii, is a perennial bulbous plant that blooms from March to July. This majestic plant has sturdy stems that are 30cm (12in) long and bear elongated clusters of 6 to 12 bell-shaped flowers that are 1 to 4cm (2in) long. These elegant flowers are brick-red at the base and purple on the inside. They are mostly solitary or in small numbers and consist of 6 similar tepals with 6 stamens. At the base of the tepals is a nectary that emits a pleasant fragrance that repels rodents.

Originally from Central Asia, Fritillary sewerzowii is very hardy. It has beautiful grey-green foliage along the stem. The lanceolate leaves, 8 to 15cm (3 to 6in) long, are alternate, opposite at the base of the stem. This sewerzowii variety can reach a height of 30cm (12in) and a width of 10cm (4in) when fully grown.

Fritillaria thrives best in a continental-type climate with dry winters and summers and humid springs. It is an ideal perennial for rockeries, rocky banks, and raised beds. It is also found in dry meadows and thickets. Plant it in tulip beds, where they will provide height and protect the tulips from rodent attacks.

Planting and care

Fritillaria sewerzowii is a robust plant. However, it does not tolerate rain during its dormant period. Place in an alpine greenhouse or under a frame to protect it from rain in summer and keep the bulbs almost dry. It does not tolerate humidity. It appreciates full sun and can withstand drought well. It is suited for continental climates. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in fairly fertile and very well-drained soil that is dry in summer. This soil should remain compact. When planting, place it 20cm (8in) deep and space the bulbs about 40cm (16in) apart. Just like lilies, to which it is related, fritillaria can be attacked by lily beetles (Lilioceris lilii) that devour the leaves. It is also susceptible to slug attacks.
