Description

Full of dynamism, the Asian double orange Ranunculus, a variety of Ranunculus asiaticus, offers a profusion of round, full, double flowers in spring. Symbolizing confidence and optimism, the orange colour suits this flower perfectly, whether in the garden or in pots. Not content with being so adorned, its very coquettish flowers last 3 weeks in a vase. Not very hardy, it is grown in partial shade or full sun, in moist, humus-rich soil.

The Asian ranunculus, also known as garden ranunculus or oriental ranunculus, is a perennial herbaceous plant with tubers native to the eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Crete), in the buttercup family, just like our Buttercup. The Asian double orange Ranunculus is a spring-flowering variety that is often grown under cover, in floristry, to hasten the production of its magnificent corollas. In May-June, each bulb produces up to 10 large flowers in very full cups. These flowers measure from 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter.

Its deciduous foliage develops in a rosette. The basal leaves measure from 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) long. They are pale to dark green, divided into three deep lobes. At maturity, this Asian ranunculus can reach 35 cm (14in) in height. It is a plant that is not very hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F). Its root is very perennial, consisting of several small elongated tubers, grouped together in a vascular bundle, sometimes called "claw", in the coldest regions, do not hesitate to store the tubers, like gladioli, to make sure you can enjoy them the following year.

The Asian ranunculus can be grown in borders, rockeries, and even in pots on a terrace. It is a very ornamental plant that is also used in bouquets, for its excellent lasting quality. It can be combined in floral arrangements with roses, antique roses that resemble them so much, or even modern roses with perfect forms, in shades ranging from red to garnet, passing through all shades of yellow and orange.

Planting and care

The Florist's Buttercup is planted in autumn, in mild climates or in pots, for an early flowering (April-May) or in spring, in cold climates, for a summer flowering. It thrives in partial shade as well as in full sun. Place it in a light soil, possibly enriched with coarse sand, humus and water. This plant does not tolerate limestone soils. In autumn, dig up the tubers and store them in a dry and cool place to protect them from frost as they are not very hardy. Before planting them, we recommend soaking the bulbs for half a day. During planting, plant the tubers in an equal mixture of garden soil, leaf compost and fairly coarse river sand. It flowers 120 days after planting. Planting density: 16 to 20 bulbs per square meter.
