Description

The Pauline Violet Buttercup is a early flowering perennial that is better suited for greenhouse cultivation. In May-June, each bulb produces up to 10 large cup-shaped flowers in a deep purple color. The flowers measure 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter.

Its deciduous foliage forms a rosette. The basal leaves measure 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) long. They are pale to dark green, with three deep lobes. At maturity, this Asian buttercup can reach a height of 40 cm (16in). Native to the eastern Mediterranean, it is a less hardy plant that can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F).

It is cultivated in flower beds, borders, rock gardens, and even in pots on a terrace. It is an ornamental plant that is also used in bouquets for its longevity, approximately 3 weeks.

Planting and care

The Purple Pauline Buttercup thrives in partial shade as well as full sun. Place it in a light, humus-bearing and moist soil. Keep the bulbs in a dry and cool place to protect them from frost as they are not very hardy. Before planting, it is recommended to soak the bulbs for half a day. During planting, plant the bulbs in a mixture of equal parts garden soil, leaf compost and fairly coarse river sand.
