The uvulars (Uvularia in Latin) are deciduous perennial plants with rootstocks from the Colchicaceae family, native to the undergrowth of Eastern North America. They are very hardy plants that thrive in humus and cool, acidic (non-calcareous) soils.
Uvularia grandiflora is the most commonly planted species in gardens, out of the five in the genus. It is admired for its fresh green foliage and its pretty yellow pendulous bell-shaped flowers, which shine brightly in shade. It is also appreciated for its ability to grow under deciduous trees without becoming invasive, in shaded or semi-shaded areas of the garden.
It will look beautiful when paired with Himalayan blue poppies, Trillium, or alongside ferns that thrive in similar conditions.
