Description

This blend of Rembrandt Tulips brings together several different varieties in a beautiful range of colours. They all offer often two-tone flowers and always well-contrasted with superb flame or striped patterns. In a classic cup shape, they are carried by long stems that emerge from flower beds and allow for beautiful bouquets. They bloom in the middle of the tulip season, late April, more or less early depending on the climate.

The 'Rembrandt' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in division 9, whose main characteristic is to present variously variegated two-tone flowers. In the past, these tulips were ordinary plants affected by a virus spread by the green peach aphid. It was the virus that was responsible for the variegation of the flowers. Nowadays, Rembrandt tulips are the result of cross-breeding and selection. Depending on the varieties, the stem reaches a height of between 50 and 60 cm (20 and 24in). The flowers are in a narrow cup shape, showing six "petals" (more precisely tepals) of thick and slightly silky texture. The basal foliage is composed of broadly lanceolate leaves of green-blue colour. It yellows and dries a few weeks after flowering, when the bulb enters its resting phase.

The 'Rembrandt' tulip mix finds its place in large flower beds, but it is especially prized in vases. In the garden, it can be combined with simple flowers such as Forget-Me-Nots, Grape Hyacinths, Scillas, Hyacinths, and white tulips. This also allows for maximizing the flowering period of the flower beds. Mix it with white daffodils, lady's mantle, or even hellebores and euphorbias, and you will achieve stunning scenes. In a vase, use very little water. Additionally, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Note: Each batch is unique and the proportion of colours may vary significantly from one batch to another.

Planting and care

Plant Rembrandt tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil; slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add uncomposted manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Rembrandt tulips will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant them in a sunny or partially shaded position. After flowering, it is best to remove the fruit to avoid exhausting the plant.
