Description

Tulipa 'Tropical Lady' is a beautiful pastel variety with variegated foliage that will create a stunning effect in spring flower beds, even when not in bloom. This variety of Triumph tulip bears pastel pink flowers with salmon undertones on grey-pink stems, dominating beautiful variegated green-white foliage. This charming and unusual tulip deserves a prominent place near a pathway or close to the house.

Tulipa 'Tropical Lady' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it was introduced in 2004 in the Netherlands. It is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to bear narrow cup-shaped flowers. The flowers appear at the top of 50cm (20in) tall sturdy stems, which are weather resistant. The elegant and simple flowers display a soft pink colour that discreetly flames with salmon-pink. This delicate colour stands on its own but easily harmonises with a range of soft colours in flower beds. Shaped like a 4 to 6cm (2in) diameter cup, the flowers display six "petals" (more precisely tepals) with a thick and slightly silky substance. Its variegated foliage is both soft and luminous, adding another asset to this dazzling variety. The broadly lanceolate leaves are green-grey-blue in colour, marginated with cream, sometimes with pink. Flowering takes place in April-May, in the heart of the tulip season, just after early single tulips.

Tulipa 'Tropical Lady' works well in large flower beds, or planted in small groups along the edge of a lawn. Its delicate colour complements tulips with white, pink, or purple tones, or with blue flowers (forget-me-nots, grape hyacinths, squills, Siberian bugloss, hyacinths) that will not overshadow the flower colour or the beauty of the foliage.  Combine it with white daffodils, lady's mantle, or hellebores and euphorbia for a beautiful scene. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials. The flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Place the bulbs in a sunny or partially shaded spot from late September to December for spring flowering. Plant the bulbs in well-drained and deeply loosened soil, 15cm (6in) deep. Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart (without letting them touch) to create a mass effect that will give a more decorative appearance. Water regularly, especially during dry winters. Cut the flower stalks after flowering. Allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them.
