Description

Tulipa humilis var. pulchella 'Violacea' black base is a botanical variety. Despite its small size, it is still remarkable. It bears beautiful purple-pink star-shaped flowers with a bright yellow centre and dark violet stamens that appear almost black.

This completely hardy tulip blooms in April. Originating from the mountains of Turkey and Iran, Tulipa humilis var. pulchella 'Violacea' thrives in rocky and well-drained areas. Due to its small size, it is perfect for rock gardens and containers. When planted in the ground, make sure to provide deep drainage.

Once naturalised, this tulip spreads out in a beautiful carpet of flowers in your garden.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 6 to 10cm (2 to 4in) (the bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. Cut the flower stalks after flowering and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heuchera, tiarella, brunnera, bleeding heart, or Euphorbia cyparissia at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips, and will elegantly conceal the tulip's yellowed leaves.
