More information

A unique and attractive variety. The exterior of the flower is red-pink bordered with cream-yellow. It opens widely in the sun to reveal an interior of the same pale-yellow with a black heart surrounded by fluorescent red. This early-flowering tulip is resistant and faithfully blooms again every spring. It easily naturalises in the garden.

Description

Tulipa 'Zombie' is perhaps the most stunning among the Fosteriana Group of early and resistant hybrids. Its elegantly tapered large flower is perplexing: rather classic on the outside in pink-red bordered with cream-yellow, it opens widely in a star shape to reveal an interior ranging from orange to creamy yellow, with a throat adorned with a magnificent black pattern circled in gold and intense red. The exotic charm of the flowers is complemented by ample glaucous green foliage. 'Zombie' will charm with its longevity in the garden and its ability to naturalise in favourable soil. Stunning in flower beds or rockeries, this botanical tulip is also perfect in pots.

Tulipa fosteriana is a hardy botanical species originally from Turkestan. Tulips derived from T. fosteriana belong to division 13. These reliable bulbs are among the first tulips to bloom, sometimes as early as March 15. They naturalise and multiply easily, so they do not need to be replaced regularly. 'Zombie' produces rather short, sturdy but flexible stems, 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in) in flower, bearing at their tip a corolla that resembles lily-flowered tulips in its shape. In the sun, it opens in a star shape 12cm (5in) in diameter, widely spreading its 6 waxy-textured petals. This tulip bears broad and opulent glaucous green foliage. It dries up a few weeks after flowering, while the bulb enters a period of dormancy.

Tulips from the Fosteriana Group work well in flower beds and borders. The taller varieties are ideal for bouquets. Their sparkling yet elegant colours pair well with blue hyacinths, grape hyacinths, forget-me-nots, and with other tulips. When designing your flower beds, you must consider the height and flowering period of the tulips, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant extra bulbs for cutting, as they make gorgeous cut flowers that last a long time in a vase. Plant 'Zombie' in small groups among your perennials, at the base of bushes, in rockeries, or along the edge of flower beds.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 15cm (6in) (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heuchera, tiarella, brunnera, bleeding heart, or Euphorbia cyparissia at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips, and will elegantly conceal the tulip's yellowed leaves
