Received very beautiful bulbs, some double, winter 2019. In spring 2020, the flowering is breathtaking... both in terms of the size and originality of the flowers, with their shape and a very bright cherry red color. A marvel! I have already reserved some for autumn 2020 to expand my planting, as I adore this tulip. Revision: Received very beautiful bulbs, some double, in winter 2019. Description

Tulipa 'Barbados' bears beautiful dark red flowers with elegantly fringed petals. Its vase life is excellent. It is also distinguished by its very tall stem. A magnificent and impressive variety, which blooms late. It will create beautiful combinations with white or even black tulips.

Tulipa 'Barbados'  belongs to the Liliaceae family. It was introduced in 1999. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Crispa' group, whose main characteristic is the finely toothed tips of the petals. This large tulip will reach a height of 60cm (24in) when in bloom. Flowering takes place in May, a little later than that of other tulips. The flowers are single, with a slightly open cup shape, and measure up to 6cm (2in) wide. They initially appear green before their fabulous gleaming shade appears over time. The particularly fringed edges are a lighter, scarlet red. The flowers last a long time and extend the tulip season until May.

There are few plants to rival dentate tulips. They are unique and elegant. Ideal in borders, the 'Barbados' tulip pairs well with varieties such as T. 'Paul Scherer' (which is almost black), or the white-flowered T. 'Maureen Double', which bloom at the same time. It will create beautiful spots of colour in perennial borders, in the company of biennial plants that will fill the space after flowering. You can choose forget-me-nots or wallflowers for this purpose. Dentate tulips bring a unique touch to bouquets.

Planting and care

Plant as soon as possible in well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 15cm (6in) (the bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly. We recommend planting heucheras, tiarellas, brunneras, bleeding hearts, or Euphorbia cyparissia in the foreground of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and will elegantly conceal the tulip's yellowed leaves.

Red is still uncommon in the garden. For an elegant effect, red tulips will be magnified by dark green foliage, like a hedge of yews or boxwoods. Also consider dark foliage like Heuchera 'Obsidian'.
