Description

The Tulip Triumph 'Boston' is a variegated tulip that is ideal for adding a touch of exoticism to spring flowerbeds. Its large, flared flower is beautifully bicolour, with intense purple-pink petals streaked with yellow at the base. Over time, the colours soften and become more pastel. When planted in mass, this variety stands out in the garden. Combine it with yellow and orange tulips or late-flowering daffodils, along with purple foliage, for a guaranteed effect! Its sturdy stem can withstand inclement weather and looks wonderful in bouquets.

The Tulip Triumph 'Boston' belongs to the Lily family. Developed horticulturally and introduced to the market in 2007, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, characterized by narrow cup-shaped flowers. They are the result of cross-breeding between early-blooming single tulips and Darwin tulips. This 'Boston' variety develops a strong flowering stem of about 45cm (18in) in height. Its flower is rather large and distinctly bicolor. It blooms from late April to May, towards the end of the tulip season. The foliage emerges from the ground in spring, consisting of large lanceolate leaves with a glaucous green colour that turn yellow and dry up a few weeks after flowering, when the bulb enters its dormant period.

Triumph tulips are unmatched for bringing spring colour to pots or sunny gardens. When designing your flowerbeds, don't forget to consider the height and flowering period, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few extra bulbs for cutting, as they make gorgeous long-lasting cut flowers. 'Boston' finds its place in large flowerbeds, paired with other white or yellow tulips, as well as alongside blue flowers. Forget-me-nots, wood hyacinths, and grape hyacinths will enhance its warm hues. Also plant this Boston tulip at the base of a Japanese maple with purple foliage for a perfect combination of colours and textures. Tulips are also lovely flowers for cutting.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Tulips will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant them in a good exposure, sunny or semi-shaded. Once flowering is over, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
