I didn't have any sprouts, so no flowers. The bulbs didn't recover at all.

Description

Dahlia 'Black Jack' is a semi-cactus variety. The dark red flowers have a shape between decorative and cactus. They bloom from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tuberous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow, and branched stems, bearing compound leaves that are odd-pinnate, with rounded leaflets. It develops strong, fleshy stems, 90 to 120cm (35 to 47in) tall. They are topped with dark red flowers with wide, tapering and lacerated ligules at the ends, measuring 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) in diameter.

Dahlia 'Black Jack' grows in rich, clayey soil that is deeply worked. It prefers warm and sunny conditions, sheltered from prevailing winds. It does not thrive in poor, sandy soils.

Dahlia 'Black Jack' is perfect in mixed flower beds with other varieties. The flowers are also ideal for making bouquets.

Tips: when planting, consider the dimensions of the dahlia when designing your flower beds.

Planting and care

Plant from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always provide support stakes and loosely tie the young stems. Add slow-release compost or organic fertiliser during planting, and liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before the frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in a cool, well-ventilated, and dark place that is not too humid. Transplant in early May once the risk of frost has passed.
