Description

The  Dahlia 'Topmix Pink', like all Dahlia in the Topmix series,  is a small, bushy variety that produces many small, single flowers in various colours. The 'Pink' selection offers delicious flowers in a medium lavender pink, blooming around a beautiful golden heart. They bloom on a small, densely leafy dark green bush from July to October. A standout plant for borders and cottage gardens, as beautiful in ornamental beds as a companion to the vegetable garden, it allows for creating beautiful potted displays and charming bouquets.

Dahlias, from the Asteraceae family, are originally from the high plateaus of Mexico. Currently, the approximately 25,000 horticultural varieties obtained by humans have invaded, to our great pleasure, gardens worldwide.

The 'Topmix Pink' variety is a dwarf Dahlia that falls between the "Mignon" and "Decorative" categories. The plant will not exceed 45 cm in all directions, with a bushy and compact habit, not requiring staking. This variety blooms from July to October. What we call "flowers" are inflorescences called capitules, measuring about 5 cm (2in) in diameter. They resemble lovely single corollas composed of a row of oval-rounded and almost flat outer ligules in a medium pink colour with lavender highlights surrounding the central disc composed of tiny ligules in a golden yellow colour. The branching stems are hollow, and the leaves are opposite and divided into 3 or 5 finely toothed lobes. The leaves and stems are a fairly deep green.

To promote repeat flowering and extend the flowering period, remove faded flowers. Even better, regularly cut them to create charming, colourful bouquets by combining various varieties.

'Topmix Pink' pairs particularly well with echinaceas and perennial salvias (Salvia nemorosa or pratensis) with violet, mauve, or pink flowers. It will create colourful spots in borders and at the front of beds alongside catmints, autumn asters, Helen's flowers, and dwarf cosmos. Also, consider pairing it with Pennisetum villosum or setaceum Rubrum and Stipa pennata, which are lovely feather-like grasses ideal for adding softness, lightness, and delicacy to the decor. This variety is suitable for container gardening to decorate the terrace or balcony easily.

A standout plant for borders and cottage gardens, Dahlias effortlessly accompany the most beautiful flowers and humble vegetables. They allow for the creation of beautiful potted displays and charming bouquets. This tuberous plant was initially cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption in Mexico. But its poor taste qualities assigned it the status of an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Topmix' is easy to grow in all regions. For abundant flowering, it is good to follow a few simple rules: plant the tubers in a sunny location after the last frost, rich, fresh, and well-drained soil is perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Do not hesitate to amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with blood, fish and bone. Place your tuber and crumble the soil well to fill without any air pockets. Your dahlia should be covered with about 6 cm (2in) of soil. At the end of planting, water once abundantly, then renew this watering regularly during the first 6 weeks to help with rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold, they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts will blacken the foliage, it's time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers. Remove as much soil as possible. Let the foliage dry so that the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm (4in). Spread your bulbs in a box on a newspaper. Store in a frost-free, dry, cool, and dark place, such as a garage or attic. In milder regions where there are only a few days of frost per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a carpet of leaves or straw for protection.
