Description

This collection of six purple Lily and Arum bulbs will enable you to create 'chiaroscuro'-style, minimalist cut flower bouquets that will perfectly suit a contemporary decor. While the flowers are predominantly very dark purple, they are cleverly illuminated with touches of white. The star-shaped form of the Lilies complements the slender trumpets of the florists' Arum. These bulbous plants bloom for approximately 3 months, from June to August.

This collection consists of:

- 3 x 'Netty's pride' Lilium or Asian Lilies: flowers with perfectly stunning, 12 cm (5in), approaching black and white Lilium or Asian Lilies. Their heart is a very dark purple, while the tips of the petals are white. In-between, a central area splashed with purple creates an elegant transition. The only thing missing from this Lily is its fragrance. Its stems reach a height of 60-70 cm (24-28in) from the ground.

- 3 x Zantedeschia 'Schwartzwalder': a variety of hybrid Calla Lily or Arum, with flowers called spathes, measuring approximately 10 cm (4in), in an almost blackish purple colour. Very long-lasting, this variety is used by florists in the summer. Its decorative foliage is of a consistent green colour. Not very hardy, it grows to a height of 40 cm (16in) and is particularly suitable for container gardening.

To encourage reblooming, remove any faded flowers, or better still, regularly create large colourful cut flower bouquets by combining them with other varieties. To accompany this dark duo of Lilies and florists' Arum, consider Ferns and Lady's Mantle, for example. The pair will also loos very pretty with blue or pink Forget-me-nots.

Planting and care

- The 'Netty's pride' lily appreciates humus-rich, slightly calcareous, well-drained and light soil. Plant it in full sun, preferably in spring, burying the bulbs 15 cm (6in) deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf compost. Surround them with a pocket of sand that will protect them from rot and slug attacks, while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as growth only starts in April. When the stems reach 30 cm (12in) in height, discreetly stake them. If red insects appear, treat them immediately, as they are criocère whose larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them manually, but be careful, they drop as soon as you touch them, so put a box underneath. After flowering, it is useful to cut the faded flowers halfway to keep the bed looking beautiful during the summer.

- Plant your florists' Arum bulbs from March to April, 12 cm (5in) deep, spaced 15 cm (6in) apart, in a moist location. Apply organic fertiliser at planting and at least once a year. They can also be grown in large pots, with regular watering to keep the soil moist, and fertiliser every 2 months during the growing season. Mulch them at the first cold weather as they are sensitive to winter dampness and severe frosts, and are not very hardy from central Europe northwards. If grown in pots, store them indoors during winter. You can prune the foliage after the first frosts.
