Description

Alstroemeria Inca Coral is a variety that stands out for its refined flowering, a beautiful pink slightly tinged with coral and punctuated with yellow, which you can enjoy from June to October. It has a compact habit, ideal for pots and for the front of borders. Highly appreciated by florists, it is superb in bouquets.

Belonging to the family of Alstroemeriaceae (Liliaceae), Alstroemeria or simply, Peruvian Lily, is a perennial with tuberous roots. Its funnel-shaped flowers are quite similar to the flowers of Lilies and Orchids. They are grouped above upright stems, adorned with deciduous medium green foliage. The Inca Coral variety is semi-dwarf, with a compact habit, reaching an average height of 45cm (18in) and a width of 40cm (16in).

With its South American origins, the Peruvian Lily has retained a pronounced preference for warmth. Therefore, it should be planted in a warm and sheltered location, in full sun or partial shade in regions with scorching summers. It thrives in a light, deep, well-drained, and humus-rich soil. Its root system may be a bit slow in the first few years, so be patient... it takes some time to establish itself.

It is moderately hardy (up to -7°C (19.4°F)), and if grown in a pot, it should be protected during the winter. In colder regions, we recommend generously mulching the base before the arrival of the first frost.

To stimulate its long flowering period, it is advisable to remove faded flowers, although the Alstroemeria is so elegant in bouquets that it is unlikely to be necessary.

In the garden, it is an easy plant to combine within a border, in harmony with the 'Sundown' Purple Coneflower and Mertonensis Foxglove.

Planting and care

You will plant your Alstroemerias in a warm and sheltered location, ideally in a light, deep, well-drained, and humus-rich soil. If your soil is very heavy, it is advisable to mix it with sand and compost. Its root system can be a bit slow in the first few years, so be patient... it takes some time for it to establish. Planting should be done in late spring, once the risk of frost has passed.

Alstroemeria is moderately hardy (up to -7°C (19.4°F)). If grown in a pot, it should be stored frost-free during winter. In the garden, in regions with harsh winters, we recommend generously mulching its base before the arrival of the first frosts.
