More information

A begonia from the Sun Cities series with good tolerance of sun and heat, as well as drought. However, the plant thrives in rich, well-drained soil that remains cool. This Begonia has a very large tuber, a sign of vigour that is not contradicted by the abundance and length of its bright orange-red flowers. The plant forms an upright clump and produces hundreds of flowers in light, drooping clusters. This drooping variety is well suited to both pot and hanging baskets.

Description

Begonia Bertinii boliviensis 'Santa Cruz' comes from the 'Sun Cities' collection. It has a very large tuber, a guarantee of exceptional vigour. It is also more heat and sun resistant. 'Santa Cruz' reveals bell-shaped flowers, in a fiery red-orange hue, with a yellow heart. These flowers stand out beautifully against the plant's slender, pointed green leaves. It is ideal for planting in pots, such as hanging baskets and planters, where its flowers delicately spread out on the sides.

Begonia Bertinii boliviensis 'Santa Cruz' belongs to the Begoniaceae family, and is part of tuberous hybrid begonias whose parents are mainly from the Andean tropical forests. It is a cultivar that blooms tirelessly from July to October. It will reach a height and width of 35 to 45 cm at maturity, forming a densely leafy ball. It starts vegetating from mid-spring. Its foliage is deciduous, fleshy, dark green, wing-shaped, with serrated edges. The laminae are always asymmetrical and waxy in texture; the petioles have stipules at their base. The stems of this begonia are brittle. Its flowers are single, with slightly open bell shapes, grouped in small trailing clusters. After flowering, the plant goes into dormancy. The tubers will be grown like those of Dahlias.

Begonias are unrivalled for decorating shaded or semi-shaded areas. This 'Sun Cities' collection provides hybrids that tolerate more sun and drought. Partial or full shade can be tolerated, but expect fewer but larger flowers, and slightly slower growth. For best results, the soil should be rich, moist, and well-drained. Begonias are also ideal in neat flower beds, alongside lighter flowers like compact gauras and gypsophilas, as well as when grown in pots on the terrace or balcony. This superb variety is perfectly showcased in hanging baskets, but also in a large pot, in the winter garden, or in the conservatory. Lastly, it's good to know that there are hardy begonias, like Begonia grandis.

Planting and care

Plant your Bertini Santa Cruz begonias in a shady or sunny spot, in light, cool humus-rich soil. Begonias do not like soil that is too heavy, so lighten the soil with sand if necessary. Plant after the last frosts, one per pot about 20 cm apart, or 25 cm apart in the open ground. Position the tuber with the concave (hollow) part facing upwards and cover with 5 cm of soil. As with Dahlias, you can speed up their life cycle by planting them from February in pots, kept under cover, and taking them out in May. Water very regularly. Apply begonia fertiliser at planting and then twice a month during the season. Remove any spent flowers. Dig up the bulbs before the first frost and store them in a little peat in a cool, dry place over winter. It thrives in light soil rich in organic matter (well-rotted garden compost) that does not retain moisture. It is also fairly susceptible to powdery mildew and nematodes, and requires regular but not excessive watering. Begonia is a frost-bearing plant, so it cannot withstand sub-zero temperatures. For this reason, it is often grown in containers that can easily be moved into greenhouses or heated conservatories as soon as the first frost sets in. If it is in the ground, this is the time to remove it and keep it under cover until the following spring.
