Description

The Begonia Crispa 'Marginata White-Red' is a superb tuberous variety with large, bicoloured,d semi-double flowers. The white and curly petals are relatively wide and edged with burgundy. Compact and upright, it is perfect for filling a shaded area that is too shady for other summer flowers. It will be very decorative on mixed borders or pots and containers.

The genus Begonia belongs to the family of Begoniaceae. Mainly originating from intertropical rainforests, these plants often have fleshy underground stems, either a rhizome or a tuber. The Begonia Crispa 'Marginata White-Red' is a tuberous variety that flowers from June until the end of October. It maintains an upright habit and reaches an average height of 35 to 40 cm (14 to 16in) and slightly less in width. The foliage is deciduous, dark green, alternate and velvety. The asymmetrical leaf blades are characteristic of the genus and contribute to the exotic charm of begonias. The plant is herbaceous, and the tissues are swollen with water, so it is called a succulent stem. The flowers are semi-double, pure white with burgundy edges. The petals are curly along the edges.

This variety will tolerate a shaded area if it receives a few hours of sunlight daily. It prefers light and organic-rich soils that do not retain moisture. Begonias are frost-sensitive plants and cannot withstand negative temperatures. For this reason, they are often grown in pots or containers that can be easily moved into cold greenhouses or a conservatory at the first frost. If planted in the ground, the tubers should be stored away at the end of the flowering season and kept protected until the following spring. This beautiful begonia will be perfect alongside its alter ego, the Trailing Begonia Belleconia, which is pink, red, or orange cannas.

Planting and care

Plant your Begonia Crispa 'Marginata White-Red' in a shady or sunny location, in light and moist soil rich in humus. You can use homemade compost to enrich your substrate; ensure it is well-rotted. Begonias are sensitive to heavy soils, so lighten it if necessary with sand. After the last frost, plant one tuber per 20 cm (8in) pot or place 25 cm (10in) apart in open ground. Position the tuber with the concave (hollow) part facing upwards and cover with 5 cm (2in) of soil. Like Dahlias, you can speed up their growth cycle by planting them as early as February in pots kept sheltered and taking them out in May. Water regularly. Apply begonia fertiliser at planting, then twice a month during the season. Remove faded flowers. Dig up the bulbs planted in open ground before the first frost, and store them in a bit of turf, in a dry and cool place, during winter.
