Canna glauca Ra - Water Canna

Canna glauca ‘Ra’ offers, abundantly, from June until the first frost, bright yellow flowers. Its clump of elongated and pointed leaves of a beautiful bluish green can reach 1.5 to 2 m in height with a spread of 60 cm. Exotic and aquatic, this water canna will naturally find its place in a sunny flower bed, in moist to very moist soil, on the banks of a body of water or in a pond. Not very hardy, dig up the rootstock in winter and store it in a dry and cool place during the winter.

From the Cannaceae family, Canna glauca is an aquatic species native to wet areas of tropical America and the southern United States. It has since naturalised in Asia. The variety 'Ra' owes its name to the ancient Egyptian sun god. This variety offers, in fact, throughout the summer until the first frost, numerous canary yellow flowers.  Melliferous, they attract pollinating insects.  This perennial aquatic plant develops from rootstocks that can be planted in moist soil or underwater, up to 20 cm deep. Its large lance-shaped leaves are glaucous and pruinose green.  They disappear in winter.

This water canna 'Ra' can be integrated into a sunny flower bed as long as the soil is very moist. It can also decorate a pond and its banks, bringing an exotic tone. Combine it with other plants with lush foliage like a Thalia dealbata or a Colocasia 'Blue Hawaii' with green foliage highlighted by a border and purple veins. To add some color to the ensemble, add a few Iris ensata 'Illumination' with blue and white flowers.
