Description

Canna 'Queen Charlotte' stands out with its long flowering period and its brilliantly bicoloured flowers. The flamboyant flowers in scarlet red and golden yellow bloom continuously for over three months, on luxuriant foliage of a beautiful bright green. This large rhizomatous perennial has the appearance of a flowering banana tree. It will provide a tropical feel to the garden. It is not very hardy, but will reveal its full potential in moist, deep, and fertile soil. it can be grown like a dahlia. Plant it in the centre of a lawn or in a large pot on a patio for a dazzling summer display.

Canna 'Queen Charlotte' is a horticultural creation from C. edulis or C. indica, which are large perennials native to the tropical and subtropical regions of South America, and C. flaccida, with wider flowers and spectacular variegation, native to the wetlands of the southeastern United States. This plant belongs to the Cannaceae family, and to the same group as gingers and banana trees. In spring, its thick and nodose rhizome develops a dense clump, 80 to 90cm (32 to 35in) tall and at least 70cm (28in) wide, composed of large entire leaves with a slightly glaucous matte green colour, whose sheathing base forms a false stem. Thin floral stalks measuring at least 1.2m (4ft) tall appear at the heart of these stems. They bloom continuously from July to the first frost. The asymmetrical flowers are grouped at the terminal part. Their golden yellow petals are randomly maculated, spotted, and streaked with scarlet red at the base.

Hybrid cannas are majestic and beautifully colourful plants, ideal for planting at the back of flower beds. Consider planting them in a bed with about ten bulbs of the same variety, or mix them with green and purple foliage plants. Canna 'Queen Charlotte' can be used to create stunning exotic-looking container displays. Plant it with Canna 'Cleopatra', or Crinum asiaticum, with the appearance of a giant lily. Grow this plant like a dahlia. Dig up the rhizomes before the frost arrives and replant them in spring

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs after the last frosts. The soil should be moist but well-drained (if necessary, lighten your soil with turf or sand). Space them 40cm (16in) apart. Cover with 5cm (2in) of soil. Apply organic fertiliser at planting and at least once a month. Water regularly so that the soil never completely dries out. Its flowering will be more beautiful if it is planted in partial shade.

It does not like cold weather. It must be protected from frost during winter. Dig up the rhizomes and keep them dry and cool. You can place them in turf, for example.

You can speed up their cycle by planting them in pots under frost-free shelter as early as February, and then transplanting them to the garden in warmer weather.
