Description

The Canna 'Striata' is a popular hybrid cultivar of canna lily in North America. Of medium size, this plant has high ornamental value and is distinguished by its large leaves with yellow and cream veins, often edged with red, beautiful like feathers. Its flowering, endless in summer, emerges from the plant in the form of red stems adorned with bright orange flower spikes, highlighted by the unique colour of the foliage. It grows rapidly and is hardy down to -10/-12°C in well-drained soil, making it suitable for adoption in many regions. A plant that finds its place on a very sunny terrace or in an exotic and lush garden.

The Canna x generalis 'Striata' (synonymous with C. pretoria 'Striata', C. 'Bengal Tiger' and C. malawiensis 'Variegata') is a herbaceous rhizomatous plant in the cannaceae family, and is a hybrid variety. Its ancestors are native to tropical areas of Asia and America. This canna lily quickly forms an opulent clump, reaching a height of 1.5 meters (5 feet) and occupying about 70 cm (28in) of ground space. It has large, entire, wide, oblong leaves that are sheathing at the base. The lamina, with a bright green colour, is entirely covered with more or less bright yellow veins and edged with red-purple. The flowering, which takes place in summer, occurs from July-August to September-October, in the form of orange flower spikes. Each flower, measuring 6 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) in diameter, is asymmetrical and composed of 3 petals fused at the base, 3 sepals, and visible stamens. The plant easily multiplies vegetatively by producing numerous shoots.

For enthusiasts of beautiful plants with exotic charm, the Canna 'Striata' is perfect for your garden, terrace, or balcony! Very easy to grow, as long as it is not lacking in water or nutrients during its growth period, it will survive the winter without any special protection in mild regions and can be stored indoors elsewhere. In a large flowerbed, it can be associated, for example, with banana trees like Musa velutina or ventricosa, Ricinus communis, Kniphofia, agapanthus, Beschorneria yuccoides, or even Melianthus major. As a precaution, the rhizomes can be dug up in autumn to protect them from the cold, or grown in a large pot on the terrace with proper watering and fertilization.

Planting and care

In cold regions, dig up the stumps during or just before the first freezes. Important: leave some soil around the roots, then store them in a frost-free place, even without light. Divide the stumps if necessary, only in March. Replant the divisions in a pot, in a bright and heated location to start them off. Then install the plants in the garden when there is no longer any fear of frost. As soon as the first white freezes occur, cut the foliage down to the ground and then cover the stumps with a layer of 15-20cm (6-8in) of straw or dead leaves. This mulching can be done in all regions. It is important that the frost never reaches the rhizomes located just below the surface of the soil. This method provides good results, with the stumps appearing more robust, the plants are larger and the flowering is more abundant.

The 'Striata' Canna is still capable of withstanding short freezes of around -10/-12°C (14/10.4°F) in well-drained soil and under a protective mulch.
